Hi Lance & Keith,
This is a problem with UK addresses, as they do not fit conveniently into 4
fields, but firstly, please note that we do not use UK as part of our
address (nor does the post office).
For a full address 5 fields are needed, however for large towns/cities the
county can be dropped. The basic structure is: street, parish/village,
district/town, county, country (England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland/Isle
of Man).
Within a district it is possible for two parishes or villages to have the
same street name. It is a matter of geographical judgment as to what can be
dropped - it can be any of the middle three. In the case of York, as this is
the county town of Yorkshire the county name can be dropped.
There is no easy answer to this one - hence the need in the UK for wide
flexibility.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] UK Addresses & Geo Location Database
The approach I use is one similar but designed to slot into the "four
fields" concept which is more or less universal in most genealogical
programs. In the example of your York & District Hospital entry, I
would enter it in my records thus:
York at York & District Hospital, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom.
Each field fits the pattern of City; County, State, Country with the
added advantage of the specific place being slotted in too. All
similar entries would sort under "York" (city).
Oh, I know the "purist" will counter with it may not have been the
United Kingdom at that time, but I like the way it handles my records.
It also reads quite well in printed reports.
You will find that Legacy's Geo Database Locator also lists "United
Kingdom" as an option.

I'm trying to sort out my location master list (I'm a new Legacy user). I
think I have a couple of issues so please bare with me while I try and
explain. In my old program (brothers keeper) I had locations entered like
this.
(Building), (City/Town), (County), (Country). An example of this is
York & District hospital, York, Yorkshire, England
Now as I understand it, the recommendation for storing places is
(City/Town), (County), (State/Province), (Country) with the entry of
Building details (house # /street) in say Birth address.
So, if I follow this logic I go into the birth address to enter details. I
find in there, there is no place to enter county for the birth address.
What
do I do? To compound this, if I then click on the Geo Database I get three
different entries for York like this
(City), (County), (State/Province), (Country)
York , , Yorkshire , England
York , Yorkshire, , Great Britain
York , Yorkshire, , UK
So my questions are
1: how do I enter a UK address in both the location field and something
like
the full birth address.
2: Why so many different options in the GEO database and which should I
use.
Thanks for any assistance.
Keith
