They are defined ranges of sound time, generally to be played using a playlist.
Peak LE also supports these.
However, what this discussion has been about is loopbacks, which is a specially branded range/region/label.

It is also interesting (and good) that in Director, the #loopStartTime takes precedence over the sound's internal loop (if that is what it is). When #loopStartTime isn't used, the sound reverts to looping with the internal loop.

You could also shoot the movie to me & I could test my guess & send
you back an image of the sound file (so you could see it).
