We are a small social science research institute in Bangalore, with
nobody really familiar with Unix, let alone linux. But we thought we
would use Linux for our mail server, because our ISP is NIC-NET, which
supports Unix uucp, not Windows NT.

Hardware: Pentium II 400 MHz, 64MB RAM, 2GB Linux boot partition on HDD
Sis6326 AGP card with 4MB RAM
D-Link DFE-530 TX Fast ethernet card
        External modem on COM2
        Serial Mouse on COM1
        SAMTRON 40Bn SVGA colour monitor

Problem 1: We areable to do minimal install of RedHat 6, but unable to
get XWindows to work properly. Apparent reason: Monitor not supported
(not listed in the choices given by "setup", and simple VGA/SVGA
settings don't work either! Tried settings of 45Bn, but failed)

As a result, although XWindows boots up, we get an unreadable interface
(am barely able to discern the logout symbol and logout properly!)
Shouldn't there be a simple way of getting a minimal readable Xwin
interface going? And then fine tuning it inside using (say)
"enlightenment"?

Btw, I have noticed postings in this list and elswhere that suggest that
Sis6326 is a problem card vis-a-vis Linux. So perhaps we have two
problems, not one, viz., unsupported card and unsupported monitor.
Yikes!

Problem 2: Network card detected, offers a list of netword cards which
does not include the specific one we have, and other DLink options that
are available don't work (portable 600, 630).

Problem 3: When we shutdown using init 0 command or "halt" at login
prompt, linux shuts down but does not actually switch off the PC the way
Windows 98 does, and the way I have seen Linux do on other machines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated by us novices.
Also, any tips on configuring the modem, and on running uupc to
upload/download our emails from NIC (perhaps somebody on this list has
already done this?) would be very useful.

Thanks in advance.
