What does /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny say? The default Debian
installation of leafnode only allows you to connect to the news proxy
through localhost and not the actual name of the machine. Try:

slrn -C -h localhost

Also, run nmap against localhost to see if leafnode is listening in the
NNTP port.

You can use slrn to get such a listing of the newsgroups. Do the
following:

slrn -C -h news.dfn.cis.de -f ~/.jnewsrc-news.dfn.cis.de -create

The list of newsgroups will be retrieved and stored as
~/.jnewsrc-news.dfn.cis.de
