Make sure that the following line is in your /etc/hosts file:

127.0.0.1       localhost

telnet to port 119 like so:

$ telnet localhost 119

Add the following to your ~/.slrnc :

server "news.dfn.cis.de" ".jnewsrc-news.dfn.cis.de"
nnrpaccess "news.dfn.cis.de" "your_username" "your_passowrd"
