Subject: Help: can I recover this partition?!
Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 02:26:22 GMT
Hi, all! I was converting over from Slackware to Red Hat 5.2 the other day
and being in a hurry to get the install going, and not wanting to wait to ftp
over the last 350 megs of my mp3s over to my windows box, I just copied the
mp3s to a second hard drive on my Slackware system.
So, I install Redhat and first off I had it do an auto "Server" install of Red
Hat. It installs fine and I do a df -k and see that Red Hat didn't mess with
my second drive. Originally I had planned on UNPLUGGING the secondary drive
before installing, but I forgot. So then I re-install Red Hat and manually
partition the boot drive. Not once did I TOUCH the secondary drive with disk
druid.
So, now with Red Hat nicely installed, it won't recognize any partitions on
/dev/sdb. I can see the second drive in fdisk, but can't see or mount any
partitions. Did one of the Red Hat installs blow away this drive? I know
for CERTAIN that I didn't touch sdb when I used fdisk, but I'm thinking maybe
the auto install Red Hat did must have tweaked it a little.
Please someone tell me that there is a way to recover this drive, otherwise
I'm going to lose my precious techno collection of mp3s. <sigh>
Thank you all very much for any help!

Are you sure you did not set it up so that
it opens up docked on the taskbar???? Check
the properties to make sure this isn't so...

Actually, it's better than I expected, since I haven't played with GNOME
in some time. (Was too much of a pain to keep up. :))
I'm quite impressed (and it'll be really nice when the GTK-based
Netscape hits the streets).

I have 2 Hard Drives one 6.4 that is split into 2 C and E
I have another Hard Drive 2.1 M It is hdb
When i go to install Linux RedHat 5.2 I go to disk druid under
custom.When I start tp partition I enter ?boot 50 megs first,then i get
:There are currently unallocated partitions present in the list of
rtequested partition(s). The unallocated partition(s) are shown below:
1/boot5 not enough free space
Hdbb has 2014Megs
used 2012Megts
2Megs Free
I formatted hdb which in control panel is D. I had this once before but
forgot what to do to correct this.
If I do a server or Workstation install it goes right to my C drive
hda???
Actually I did a reinstall and clicked ok and it deleted all my drives
windoews and all, after days of recovering I am trying to reinstall
Linux.
I appreciate the help,if desired please email me and group.
I would appreciate it if you would try to make the instructions as
simple as possible,a bit slow at this.
Thank Again

IMHO, The 300A Celeron overclocked to 450 MHz has to be one of the better
values out there.

In creating a workaround for a waitpid() bug in Solaris 2.x & 7, we noticed
that our solution didn't work on Linux. The Solaris workaround involved
creating a separate reaper thread, that in essence calls wait() in a wile(1)
loop.
In Linux 2.2.1, libpthread-0.7, wait() in the reaper thread will never wait
for the processes started by the main thread.

All:
I'm planning on upgrading to SUSE 6.0 from Red Hat 5.1 and I'd like to
know if anyone who has done this has any caveats they'd care to pass
along. Moreover, can an upgrade be done or does one need to do a
re-intall from scratch? Any experiences, good or bad would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!

Okay. Actually, I noticed that the kerneld version which came with the
Slackware version I downloaded was only 2.0.0, while the rest of the
module stuff was 2.1.121, so I downloaded the new kerneld and all went
well. (I don't know why the kernel still says that it's loading
kerneld on startup, or why it cares at all. Does anyone know why
it's not using kmod?) Except for sound. I now get timeouts occasionally,
which is VERY annoying. I have had this problem with other kernel
versions, too. I don't know what the common element is, but it was under
S.u.S.E. and Redhat. It must be the new module software. So I guess I'll
have to compile sound into the kernel unless anyone's got any better
ideas.

Sounds like you might want to check the versions of your compilers and
libraries against those listed in ${linux_source}/Documentation/Changes
(linux_source being wherever you installed the kernel.) Using Slackware 3.3,
eh? You might want to seriously consider downloading Slackware 3.6. I
downloaded that and compiled kernel 2.2.1 with no hitch. Give it a shot.

Because you have a bug.
Try rec.games.mud.lp.
