Hi guys, I'm using RedHat 5.2 + KDE 1.1.
The dialup is working and I'm able to connect to the world.
I have the option of call back service but I don't realy know
how to make it work from my Linux OS (it works from NT).
Well, how do I do it?

You need to run linux fdisk from a shell.
Use the 'p' command to list the partitions on the default drive.
One of those partitions should have an '*' to the right of it, in the
column labeled 'Boot'; if there is no '*', you have no bootable
partition!
To set a partition bootable, use the 'a' command (toggle partition
bootable).
That should do it!

Pat

Yes, it will work and I suspect quite a large number of these machines
exist behind firewalls. How other SMTP mailers will find your machine is
a little more difficult if an MX record points the mail elsewhere.
Given this beast has fixed IP and name you can probably presuade at
least some ISPs you to delegate a subdomain to you (or at least give
you an MX and A record). I am sure some of these people would not insist
on selling you a connection as well.
Oh, and finally if do this make sure your machine is in an open relay
for anyone in the world. Such machines are used by spammers to work
around problems, like their machines have been widely backholed and
otherwise blocked so they can not send mail directly. (Cyberpromo
had this problem, if you were around when Spamford was a wanted
spammer).

Subject: Memory Allocation Issue
Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 12:58:07 GMT
My kernel (RedHat 6.0 2.2.5) died on me twice, I was unable to get into
the machine at all.
The problem seems to be that although the kernel reserves process slots
for privileged processes, it does not reserve any memory pages.
If a user level process or processes gobble up all available memory,
everything stops, you can't login in, even as root, syslogd etc. die
through lack of memory and you are forced to reboot.
Why doesn't the kernel reserve memory for privileged processes?
I made a simple change to mm/mmap.c to reserve the last 10% of pages in
this way, and this seems to solve the problem, system processes keep
running and I can login as root to kill the offending user processes.
Paul.

Simple!
Redhat 6.0 NFS now defaults to Read-only. Check your setup in
linuxconf again! Or check man exports. My exports file now loks like
this.
/ machine.name(rw)
Note the addition of the "(rw)" switch to allow read-write.

Nicer (but functionally equivalent) patch to cpio-2.4.2:
The problem I reported earlier wasn't with gcc or libc, as has
been pointed out to me, but with an incorrect assumption in
copyout.c of cpio-2.4.2. The below patch, with it's two added
type-casts, takes care of that mistaken assumption (that all
system types are integers):

don't use a minus and it'll work just fine!
tar xfv <filename.tar>
you can even do perverse stunts like
tar cvfb /dev/st0 2000 .
where the f goes with file /dev/st0 and b goes with the 2000 blocks.
see the tar info pages on old option syntax.
