I've just installed Slackware 7.0 on my new computer. I have found that
my modem does not respond under Linux, but it does under Windows. As I have
stated it is not a WinModem. It is 3Com 56K modem that I have used on my
old computer. On my old computer the modem worked fine under Linux and
Windows. Any ideas what the problem could be?

I downloaded the gnome users guide and it apparently does not
include the gnome-ppp users guide.

You contradict yourself. The KDE desktop environment isn't an alternative
to the X Window System, it is a set of X Window System programs.

No, we need some hints.
ISA or PCI?
Jumpers or PnP?
/dev/ttyS? IRQ?
Did you use the Slackware setup program to point /dev/modem at your modem?

How about talking to a Sybase ASA (SQL Anywhere) server?
They say they support only Red Hat 6.x. Anyone know how "hard"

Lilo boots the kernel that is in lilo.conf. You can add your own
configuration for newly builded kernel or make a symlink from bzImage
to /boot/whatever-your-kernel-name-is. Personally I prefer to move new
kernel & overwrite the old one, 'cause sometimes I may accidently
remove /usr/src/linux directory.

You don't need any bootdisk. You should install your lilo into your
linux partition, not into MBR & make it active. After reinstalling
windoze just run fdisk (windows version) and reactivate linux
partition as bootable.

One thing you will definitely want to tweak in the

The current directory is not in your PATH by default like it is in DOS.
So if you are in the same dir as a script or program (not in your PATH)
you have to put a './' prefix on it like './setup', or whatever the setup
script is called (it's been awhile since I installed it).

Have you looked for a README or INSTALL file. If that does not tell you,
look through the 'configure' script to see what it is looking for (search

Probably DNS queries or SMB broadcasts are triggering it. You can set
filters for things like SMB (netbios ports 137, 138, 139). For DNS either
run your own caching nameserver, also set up with forward and reverse
lookup zones for your LAN, or at least make sure that you have names
for all local IP's in /etc/hosts (and possibly \windows\hosts, not
hosts.sam).
I had diald working in RH 5.2, but never could get it to work in RH 6.1,
so I use demand pppd option. I set it to stay up at least 15 minutes,
since I pay per call, not per minute. The only other box on my LAN is a
laptop and it does not trigger demand pppd (even when running Win98se)
when it is not supposted to.

Yes, look for the 'sane' rpm or do a web search for it. Most of the

Here the controller reduces the bus speed, and the device quits timing

Subject: Problems with Belkin OmniView Switch box ?
Date: Sun, 06 Aug 2000 04:52:28 GMT
Hi all,
I am running Mandrake 7.1, and am using a Belkin Omni View SE 4-Port to
switch between the Linux box and a Win98 box.
I am finding that when I switch from the Win98 box to the Linux box,
spurious character(s) seem to be sent to a Linux xterm. It seems as if
usually, the spurious character is an "up-arrow", since I often find my
last command (repeated) in the command line (I am using bash). I am
running the same setup at work with a Linux and NT box and have seen
nary a problem.
Anybody else having this problem ? This is an annoyance, but my
real worry is that one day I am going to have something disastrous,
repeated in the command line...
thanks,
terry
