Subject: pop up message for quotas

Hello.

I am running samba 2.0.7 on a RH 6.2 machine.

I would like to be able to inform users when they have almost reached
their quota limit with a pop-up window. I know I have to use the
"smbclient -M" to do this, but I am not certain of how it should be
implemented. Is there something I can do in smb.conf to have it:

1)check how much space is left on their quota share everytime they save
something

2)send them the pop-up message.

Has anyone else tried this?

I would really love to hear how you did it, and some sample smb.conf /
shell script code would be great.

Thanks!

Chris

Subject: cdrecord and multi-session

I know that this is quite a common problem, but what I read in the
README.multi and on deja didn't help, so here goes:
I try to make a multi-session CD-R with cdrecord 1.8.1 on under SuSE
Linux 7.0. The images for each session were created with
mkisofs -r /home/ruedas/CDROM/convec > /tmp/convec.img
in the 1st session and e.g. with
mkisofs -r -C 'cdrecord -msinfo dev=3D6,0' -M /dev/sr1
/home/ruedas/CDROM/tex > /tmp/tex.img
in the following. I controlled the integrity of the image by mounting
them before writing. Then I invoked cdrecord as follows:
cdrecord dev=3D6,0 -multi -v -speed=3D2 /tmp/sem98-images.img

It seems obvious to me that I did write all three sessions, because
/tmp # cdrecord -toc dev=3D6,0

and
/tmp # cdrecord -msinfo dev=3D6,0

but when mounting I only see the 4 directories I wrote in the 1st

actually the first image was ca. 500MB but the second and third were
only 6 resp. 8 MB, but however, it seems that they have been written.
So what can I do? Is there something wrong in my recording procedure?
Any help is most welcome.

Date: 20 Nov 2000 16:49:06 -0000

When trying to install RedHat-7.0
on an old machine (a 75MHz pentium)
I got the curious error
"FATAL Cannot find library version".
The machine then hung,
and had to be reset.

Has anyone come across this?

It's not a serious matter,
as it is only a toy machine
which I have on my toy network at home.

The only unusual thing about the machine
is that I have a Fireport SCSI card in it
to run a Zip drive.
There were various error warnings
that the SCSI partition table could not be found.
(This is not surprising,
as I didn't have a Zip disk in it at the time.
In fact I'm not sure if I have any disks now.
I guess I can take out the card
and see if that was the cause.)

I didn't tell the program about the SCSI card, incidentally.
It worked out for itself that there was one.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

make sure you have the kdedir in your path and that you are running a

Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 16:54:49 GMT

I'm currently running redHat linux 6.2. I would like to
run linux 2.3.99-pre7 instead. I configured the kernel
parameters and built the os from the source code, but
the system does not boot. Unfortunately, I can't figure
out what caused the problem because the info flies off
the screen too fast. What's left on the screen are a bunch
of numbers followed by the following lines:

 Code: 8b 56 1c 89 d0 85 d2 7d 06 8d 82 ff 7f 00 00 25 00 25 00 00 ff ff

 Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill idle task!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

When I reboot with my old redHat kernel, I don't find any
of the earlier boot messages in any of the files in /var/log.
How do I log those messages? Alternately, is there any other way to
capture these messages and figure out what is causing the panic?

If it continues to crash, even for a nominally stable (even
numbered second thing in the release number) version, then you
should reconsider the possibility that it is a hardware problem.

Does it always crash when you are doing the same thing, with the
same error messages in /var/log/messages (if any)? or the same
symptoms? That could indicate some kind of configuration problem,
or a bum module or something.

(Preferably post to only one newsgroup. Otherwise you could be
considered as a spammer.)

Note that even if you do this, you expose your super-user password
to sniffers. If you do not want to make the job of crackers too
easy, you should not use telnet at all, but use ssh instead.

I don't believe they are equivalent. If it is a Sony (an old CDU31 or 33)
and you have it attached to a suitable interfce card, you need to give
Linux the parameters, something like this:

        cdu31a_port=0x330 cdu31a_irq=7

where 0x330 and 7 should reflect your actual hardware. I recall that using
an IRQ of 0 is correct for the Sony.

This is from memory and the RH 5.2 manual, I don't happen to have the 6.x
manual in front of me but I believe it to be the same.

Hi, I saw another answer that has the info you asked for, but thought
that since you obviously *_WANT_* to use my prefered editor but am
looking for it to get a little more user friendly I thought I'd expand
 the answer a little...

The 1st and best answer I'd offer you is to start vim, and from command
mode enter :help, this will open the fairly comprhensive help file which
opens on how to use help... There is lots of good reading in there.

My 2nd answer is to enclose <at the bottom of message> an almost acurate
snipage from my .vimrc file... <almost accurate because In the actual
file any ^M characters are actualy inserted in the file with vim by
from insert mode, typeing an ^V [ctrl V] then pressing enter...

And the two variable names listed are set & exported from my .profile
here at work, and at home, <dang it I forget is it .bashrc or what?>

Anyway the $spellfile points at a specific file I use again and agin to
spell check the file I'm currently editing. s feeds the current file to
ispell and S overwrites the text in vim with the Spellchecked version.
The only drawback is that if I fat finger the S when I didn't just
 spellcheck, I need to undo...

And $tmp points at the directory where I keep assorted snipage files to
be available to "Paste" in with the :r command...

Strategies for this would tend to be defined by the organization that you work for
and its security needs. I would tend to say that each organizational unit would
tend to be its own group that would have control of/ access to resources.
Additional groups might be created would be in accordance with other needs (e.g.
cross functional project groups that need specific resources).

The "Running Linux" book is an excellent resource for this. I am finding it very
valuable as I learn Linux myself (I come from a Windows NT/ 2000 background).
Another good reference volume is "Essential System Administration" by AEleen
Fritsch, also an O'Rielly title.

I looked for kdeconfig. Where is that rpm?? There is no tool on the

The logon screen it offers kde1 and kde2. The kde2 craps out completely
and comes back to the logon screen. KDE1 goes into the new KDE mode
with a grey screen and bombs out, shows a KDE error:

The application KNotify (knotify) crashed and caused the signal 11

then brings up Kandall's useful tips.

I think the $PATH statement might be one of the problems, but I am
sorry I don't know the syntax of exporting the path of KDE which is I
AM GUESSING

When I print (Red Hat Linux 6.0, Dual 550MHz Pentium III
processors), the system time jumps up to over 50%. That is a
heck of a lot of system time for an essentially 1100MHz system.

I have a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 660Cse printer connected to
the parallel port. Right now, I am not printing, am running two
instances of SetiAtHome and this Netscape and the system time
is only around 6%. The gs process (that was filtering the
output of Acrobat, but Acrobat had already exited) only takes
about 14% of the machine, so the rest must be in the printer
driver or something. Could I have made a configuration error or
something? Why would the driver (if it is the driver) consuming
so much CPU time? Can I do anything about it?

Additional question...

Why unmount the filesystem? doesn't it have to be mounted to access it
with mc? <and what if you only a "user" who doesn't have the privilege of
mounting and unmounting filesystems???>

I'd have figured the thing to do <assuming I forgot to back-up the file
first...> is to run mc and try it's undelete as quick as possible. How
much better are my odds if I can and do umount the appropriate file system,
etc...???

Hi,
This is a request for information on SMP machines with AMD micros (K6
II and up). As far as I knew, there were no motherboard designed to work
two or more of these processors. However, a colleague of mine insists in
that he's already read something on the web regarding one of these
machines (Have a look at http://www.combatsim.com/htm/mar99/k7amd.htm).
Has anybody further information about these machines? Could you point me
to some URLs on the net about the subject?
        Thanks in advance!
        Greetings!
