There is a Linux Ultra-DMA Mini-Howto at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA.html
The SuSE-6.4 kernel has the IDE/UDMA patches allready integrated.

I just installed jdk1.2.2 from Sun, and Borland JBuilder 3.5. When I
went to run StarOffice..it no longer started...just a vague message box
saying that an unrecoverable error had occured. Since StarOffice uses
the jre117_v1, I suspect that there might be some type of conflict
between the jdk1.2.2 and the jre1.1.7....perhaps StarOffice is now
trying to use the jdk1.2.2.??? Any ideas what the problem might be?

Subject: Any FreeBSD books for a Linux user?
Date: Thu, 04 May 2000 03:51:58 GMT

Hi all,

I've been thinking of expanding my horizons setting up a FreeBSD box. I
like Linux, (and make a good part of my living running it), but I want
to get a broader grounding in the open source unices. Any suggestions
for a good book, hopefully not too basic, that will help me get up and
running on FreeBSD? I'm asking here because I'm sure there are people
like me, who approach FreeBSD from a Linux background. Thanks for any
help you can give me.

You installed LILO in the MBR? *sigh*

0. Find a Win9x machine (easy, right?)
1. Insert floppy into drive of that machine, pull up DOS window
2. FORMAT A:
3. SYS A:
4. COPY C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\FDISK.EXE A:
5. Remove floppy, use floppy to boot the (former) Corel Linux box
6. FDISK /MBR

It is not in my conf.modules. Since the parport modules don't get
loaded automatically on my box, could this be the reason that
I have to load it manually for the port to work?

Well, the good news is that at the least, you have your configuration
nearly correct. I'm not familiar with PowerPC, but my only guess from
the software side is that you are using a buggy or outdated driver.

It could be a termination or cabling problem. The best way to test
termination is to remove *all* devices except your system disk and the
burner. Generally, internal drives do not cause problems, so you can
probably get a good test by removing all external devices.

Of course, if the drive works fine under MacOS, you can *probably*
eliminate cabling or termination as the problem.

Date: Thu, 04 May 2000 14:32:30 +1000

Hi everyone
Can you tell me how can I tell Linux that I've just upgraded my RAM? I
upgraded my RAM from 64M to 128M but when I saw in System Info..., Linux
still said I had only 64M ( Bios & Win98 correctly recognised my new
RAM). Anyway, I'm using RedHat 6.0.
Furthermore, do you have any idea why Linux RedHat 6.2 installation
recognised only about 14M out of 128M on my friend's computer ( I saw
it in System Info after installation) and the system run very very slow
even it is a Pentium II 400.
 Thank you very much
 Tung

rufus.w3.org - not sure if this is the exact url but do a search for rufus

I would suggest that you enable auto-detection in the bios, use your
floppy to boot into linux and then rerun lilo again.
I think the largedisk howto is a bit old by now.

Subject: Intel Providence boot failure with 2.2.14
From: Charles Roten <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 03 May 2000 22:05:00 -0700

I'm having _quite_ a bit of trouble with 2.2 kernels and an Intel
Providence PR440FX motherboard, mounting 288 MB of physical memory.

The problem _seems_ to be centered about some sort of catastrophic
interaction between the kernel and the (admittedly flaky) integrated
Adaptec 7880 SCSI controller. I have it throttled back to fast/wide
att the moment, and it uses Adaptec BIOS 1.25.

Target 0: Seagate ST39173W
Target 1: Quantum XP34300W
Target 4: Exabyte 8505 XL
Target 6: Plextor 32X CDROM

Basically, I cannot get a stable kernel, past 2.038 (which seems
to work fine) to boot.

RedHat 5.2 installs just fine. But no species of RedHat 6.x will
install or upgrade. The install diskette and the SCSI controller
don't like each other.

I installed RedHat 5.2, and built a 2.2.14 kernel on top of it.
Here is the /usr/src/linux/.config file I worked up to do this.

  Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

That last was the death moment.

I am pretty sure about those values .. I crashed that box about a
dozen times while working up this post, taking and checking notes
on another healthy system.

Could someone explain what is going on here ?
_And_ how to work around it ?

I would like to get at least another year's worth of use out of this
motherboard before I consider tossing it and upgrading, since the way
I do things, I will want to jack the physical memory up to 256 MB.

Thanks in advance
Charles Roten
