Subject: xawtv problems with overlay
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 11:09:31 +0100
Hello everybody,
I'm seeking some help because i have tried many things, but still can't
make it run.
I have installed xawtv, with no problem. i checked v4l-config and the
output claims it has found the DGA for overlay.
No i run xawtv in overlay mode. I get an empty black window, and the
picture is out of the window, in fact it takes half of my screen, but i
only have 1 line out of 5, it's black and white, and can't be put on
behind another window. So i have to choose grabdisplay, and then the
picture comes back, in color in the xawtv window with no problem. But
some of the lines are still on my screen and i have to "wipe" them by
dragging a window in front of them (in order to refresh the window).
The same probleme exist with kwintv, so i suppose that it's specific to
my configuration, but i can't find out what. (it has already worked
once)
Whgat i have tried :
i input on XF86config the line driver "mga"
i tried with v4lctl -sxxx bytes several values
i tried to change from XFree 3.86 to 4 and back
i tried different options on v4l and xawtv. Nothing changed.
I checked all my logs but there is no error with the overlay mode,
neither when i start xawtv (with debug level 2, i haven't seen anything)
Can someone plz help me, i'm desesperate.
Configuration
LM 7.2 on PII350, with matrox G200 and Hauppauge WinTv (+remote wich
works fine, thanx to lirc)

Konqueror is way better than netscape. It doesn't fall over
and is a damn sight faster on its feet. And I'm using
konqueror 2.0 (cause it works fine and I'm too lazy
to install the new one) as has been said 2.1 is better.
Of coures you dont have to install the whole of KDE to
use konquror just kdesupport, kdelibs, kdebase and the
qt libraries. I run it quite happily under FLWM.

You must reboot first.
fdisk told you to do this.
mke2fs gets it's information form /proc/partitions and this is not yet
updated
You're lucky that you didn't add a partition in between. mke2fs would have
resulted in a wiped partition.
It will boot, you can run mke2fs afterwards.
Your system is ok now.

Hi
I am considering running vmware on my laptop. However I was wondering if it
is possible to configure vmware to look for an existing installation of
windows rather than forcing you to install a new copy? I read you can do
this which saves a lot of time, but I cannot find the docs that support the
claim.
Any ideas?

You got it the wrong way around.
The X server must be running on your NT box,
the clients can be running on the linux box, displaying their X output on
the server.
So look for a X server for NT.
I use Exceed at the office (not-free), but there are free alternatives IIRC

Londonboy,
1. Stay calm. You're in the world of open source, you compile, which
ususally
just means #./configure;make;make install . In addition, making
invidious comparisons
with MS products or features is considered bad form.
2. If I have understood you correctly, you need to add sybase
connectivity to PHP.
Then there is no need to recompile apache. You do however need to
rebuild mod_php.
What I suggest is that you get the src rpm for the php rpm that you have
been using.
You will also need to get and install the apache-devel rpm and the
sysbase rpms.
3. Now install the php src rpm. Change dir to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS. You
should see
a file php.spec . Edit that file and in the section that begins with
%build you
need to add a line in the ./configure portion to build it with sybase-ct
support,
which you can find the documentation at the php site, which is probably
something
like
--with-sybase-ct=/opt/sybase-11.9.2 \
If that is where your sybase stuff is and its the right version number.
4. I suggest you upgrade the release number in that spec file, and then
build it
with #rpm -ba php.spec . If all goes well you'll have a new php rpm in
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 (I think) witch you can install with rpm -Uhv
.
If that doesnt work you can uninstall it with rpm -e and try again.
5. FInally, have you searched thoroughly on sites like rpmfind.net for
prebuilt rpms with the features you want? Lots of people make redhat
compatible
rpms. For example, H.Gomez is rather prolific for apache related stuff
(including
losts of Java tools you might need). I noticed that he has a
php-sybase-ct rpm. You
could get the src rpm from there and use its spec file as a starting
point.

Subject: ping, syslogd, startx woes
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 10:58:56 GMT
Greetings!
I have a desktop machine (MD 7.2) networked to a laptop (RH 6.0),
today I discovered that I couldn't ping anything by hostname tho'
I could ping RH using its network number.
Then my troubles really began!
I started trying to reconfigure the network and while doing a
reboot (well, invoking telinit anyway), the system hangs on, it
seems, running syslogd. If I switch it off using chkconfig, the
system boots. (It shows up in ps -aux however.)
Then I find I cannot start an X session (startx) whether as root
or as user.
I'm not sure if these various troubles are related. Looking for
some tips.
There are other irregularities (ifconfig gives a different
loopback number than route -n, for instance) but the message is
long enough already. Maybe I've given enough clues that someone
can give me a clue?

I see. It works now. A side note on linux fdisk. I find the

it lists hard disk devices (/dev/hdax) instead of partition numbers.
Later fdisk asks for a partition number but you have no idea but guessing
