Uh I think that when you set up lilo it gives you the option to install it to
other places than mbr. Say like if your Linux boot partition is /dev/sdb1 you
can put lilo there.

The hardware clock is typically set with 'clock -w', Redhat has
/usr/sbin/setclock utility to do that. I also use Win95, but I do not
know if it simply changes the clock or if it sets the daylight savings
time bit in the CMOS clock.
You might add something to /etc/ppp/ip-up.local to run /usr/sbin/ntpdate
-bs [server list] and then /usr/sbin/setclock to keep your hardware clock
up to date.
>Also, because of b), should I rather use UT for the hardware clock?
I thought mine showed daylight savings time when I booted to Linux even
though the clock was off an hour until I booted into Win95. Maybe you
just need to make sure you are on the correct time zone and update your
clock regularly.

ok, i got my modem working finally. thanks to all those that posted
messages. now, when i dial up, everything seems to be working. i get
the login and password prompts, and they are filled out. then it
comes back and says i have an invalid option in /etc/ppp/options - the
/dev/modem line. so i tried to take that line out. that seemed to
work, but now my conncection times out before the pppd console comes
up. any suggestions? thanks again

Yes, this is correct. I would also suggest *always* mounting Win9x file
systems as vfat to save yourself a lot of frustration.

Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 05:09:00 GMT
Hi,
After finding out that there were no RockRidge drivers for NT, I
decided I would just write a something that did the conversion for me.
My program goes through the tree, renaming everything to what it
should be. So, you put the CD in, copy it to the local drive
somewhere, then run my program. Then you are free to do FTP installs
from the local copy.
Its also a pure Java program, so it should work on any machine. I
would think that it would be handy on NT, 98, OS/2, and any Unix that
did not support RockRidge extensions.
I would like to publish this as open source (there is not much to it,
but its still useful) I would love it if it ended up someday on the
RedHat CD. :)
But maybe its something that no one would bother using. I think its
easier than switching a CD-ROM with another machine....
You guys let know....

particular, you might want to try:
mount /dev/scd0 -t iso9660 /cdrom
assuming that your cd-rw drive is being recognized as /dev/scd0. You could
also try /dev/scd1 - /dev/scd15 (15... i think...).

Personally, I use Perl for little jobs like this all the time:
======================================================================
use Net::FTP;
$ftp = new Net::FTP("my.host.com");
$ftp->login("username", "password");
$ftp->cwd("/path/to/my/directory");
$ftp->get("myfile.1");
$ftp->get("myfile.2");
$ftp->quit;
======================================================================
There's also a Net::Telnet module that would enable you to do the zipping
you want.

If I'm reading you right, you have both EIDE and SCSI disks on the same
machine, and you're trying to boot Debian on /dev/sdb4.
You can't do that. [1]
LILO is telling you it's having a really hard time finding your boot
partition. Unless you've got a newfangled MB and BIOS, an EIDE drive
preempts all SCSI devices. You may want to muck around in BIOS and/or
SCSI setup to see if your board is an exception to this rule, but
chances are you're SOL.
The SuSE install is an interesting twist. Are you sure there's not
something you've forgotten to tell us here? How about a copy of
/etc/lilo.conf?
Best bet is to boot from floppy, then move /boot to a small partition
(or directory) on your first EIDE drive. Your Linux root partition may
be on any partition on your system, but LILO has to be able to find your
kernel. BTW, since all your distros share the same essential kernel,
you should be able to share /boot among them. You can specify different
kernels and/or root partitions as needed.
> I checked the LILO documentation, and it says this "shouldn't happen"

Read it again, carefully and cluefully. You'll understand it eventually
(or die trying).
[1] Or I'm dead wrong.

You're right. It's time Linux users started pushing for a good Linux
Keyboard which doesn't have the extra keys which make no sense under Linux.
It should have about 50 keys total - counting 95 printable ASCII characters,
a Shift key (which will be used to access almost half of those 95
characters), a Control key, an Enter key, and an Erase key. Yes, this key
should be called neither Backspace nor Delete so there will be no
preconceived notions about what it _should_ do.
Oh, did you mean that Linux should attempt to create the illusion that the
101-key PeeCee keyboard makes sense?
Nevermind.
