I think you may be misunderstanding things a tad; it's _users_ that
have passwords, not groups.

Users are _members_ of groups.

Passwords don't enter into this.

Subject: boot problem (kernel panic)
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 00:07:06 GMT

I tried to update my RH 6.0 system to 6.2. After running the
installation program (the "upgrade" option), LILO tries to load linux,
and everything freezes with the following error message(s):

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:0b
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:0b

I get the same problem if I try to boot using the boot disk created by
the installation program.

Everything was fine before I tried the upgrade. Also, I can boot up in
Windows NT just fine using the DOS option in LILO.

The BIOS recognizes my SCSI drives just fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Hello,
In order to check a security of my linux box, I performed a port
scan to my linux box and it displayed the following things:

Port ServiceName Description
21 ftp File Transfer [Control]
23 telnet Telnet
25 smtp Simple Mail Transfer
98 tacnews TAC News
110 pop3 Post Office Protocol - Version 3
113 auth Authentication Service
119 nntp Network News Transfer Protocol
139 netbios-ssn NETBIOS Session Service

I almost understand why each port is opened except for tacnews.
So I have two questions about this result.
 1. What is tacnews? I checked inetd.conf of my linux box to
close this port but could not find the related things.
How is tacnews port closed? What opens tacnews port?

 2. Is it no problem to close auth port by commenting on auth
line on inetd.conf? If something like problem appears,
    what it is?

Please advise to me.

I keep getting this error whenever I run most of the module utils.

# /sbin/insmod hello.o
insmod: kernel1: QM_SYMBOLS: Unknown error 263732004

# /sbin/ksyms
ksyms: kernel1: QM_SYMBOLS: Unknown error 263732004

I do have kernel support for modules turned on in the config file.

I built the kernel and the module (hello.o - from the guide on modules
at linuxdoc.org) using a cross-compiler for mips on an i386 box. The
kernel version is 2.4.0-test3. The module is part of an 8MB RamDisk
compiled with the kernel using initrd. This is the only module I am
trying to load. The kernel seems to work fine otherwise.

Has anyone seen similar errors before?

Thanks
Chandra

Subject: Out of Memory Error...
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 10:36:36 +1000

Hi All,
I have a Redhat 6.1 box, running Lotus Domino. Lotus is giving me out of
memory errors. I don't think this is the problem though. My memory status
with the servers are running is...
Mem: 386552K av, 383424K used, 3128K free, 629740K shrd, 12644K buff
Swap: 257000K av, 30088K used, 226912K free 55916K cached

I traked the problem down too Too many processes running.
When this was a stright Red hat install the processes would get to
about 309 (This is what top tells me is running) then I would start getting
this error. I then edited the /etc/security/limits.conf file & added this
lines.. (I guessed on values from example :))

notes soft nproc 1500
notes hard nproc 2000
notes - nofile 900

After doing these changes I stopped getting the errors. But now they have
started again. Now the processes get to about 410 before stopping. Any ideas
to what could be causing this?
One Idea I have is that it is getting too many processes again but shouldn't
those lines I added make the numbers of processes go alot higher. The max
red hat can handle is 2048 & the notes user (this is the user id that the
servers run under) can use most of them.
The only other idea I have is too many open files. Red hat can handle 1024
open files. but how do I check how many are used? I tried using lsof but it
doesn't just show open files by what I could tell. If it is only showing
open file sthen there is more then 1024 :) other things I am seeing in there
is open http requests

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have install RedHat 6.2 with 64M ram, now I have upgrade the server
to128M, how do I change the system configuration to utilize all there 128M?
I can do it during the boot time by typing Linux mem=128M at boot prompt,
but I cannot retain this setting after I have try to reboot it again.
Any help is appreciate.

Subject: slow upload with ethernet?
Date: 20 Sep 2000 18:33:49 -0700

Hi,

Recently, my computer started uploading things very slowly. I'm on an
ethernet connection, and I used to be able to upload/download up to around
1 MB/s. Now, my downloading is fine, but my uploading is only about 0.1
MB/s. I have moved to a different subnet (other computers on this subnet
don't have this problem though), and I have also upgraded my processor and
motherboard (although why this would make it slower, I can't imagine). My
card is a Linksys, using the tulip driver.

I tried tcpdump, but I don't really understand the output enough to see
any problems. This is the output when downloading (705 k/s):

Add this line to /etc/lilo.conf just below the "default=" line.

apend="mem=128M"

Then run "/sbin/lilo" to update the MBR.

First off, if this is going to be any kind of server that you don't want to be
hacked into, use SSH and not telnet. Close up that telnet port and any others
that you don't absolutely need.

1) download the latest version of Apache and install
2) Read up on using DNS/Bind (http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html) to
learn how to set it up as a DNS server.
3) Create users on the system which will generate email addresses at the machine

4) Read up on configuring Sendmail
(http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/RH-sendmail-HOWTO/book1.html) to set
up email aliasing. I did this over a summer and let me tell you it's fun.

These are the basic steps you need to take if you're planning on doing this from
a vanilla install with no 3rd-party software.

Set up a shell script that gets each process name and stores it in a
tempfile (I'd use sed if I were you).
Then loop through that temp file and stick each process name in a variable
($name), then do this:

tr -d [ $name | tr -d ]

the output will be the name without brackets. if the name has no brackets
nothing will change. Then do
whatever you want with the output.
