It sounds to me like your kernel doesn't support your CD-ROM. You should
probably recompile your kernel, and add in support for everything in it
that says the word CD-ROM. You can find information on downloading,
configuring, and installing your kernel on howto.tucows.com, under
Kernel-HOWTO. There is too much info to type into a post. I just tried
and got disconnected, and netscape got all gay on me, and I had to kill
it, and I lost a long message that I was going to send you.

As for you Network Card, find out waht it is, and make sure that it's
supported by the kernel. It probably is, but it could be difficult, if
it's an ISA card, that's also plug n' play(PNP) you might need to
download a program called ISAPNPTools, or buy a new Ethernet adapter,
like I did. Hope this helps.

I have no clue what fsconf is, although i'm guessing that its some
distro-specific proprietary piece of software. Why not just mount your
drive manually with:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Hi, just tried to install Mandrake 7.1 off the net (I have T1

An error occurred: dpslist.ordered mismatch against hdlist files

What's wrong? I had Mandrake 7.0 installed in my hard disk but I
thought that 7.1 already reformated all the partitions.. any idea?
thanks!

some extra questions: Do you try to login by an display-manager(graphical,
X-Windows) or in a text-console? In the 1st case there you might have a
problem with the X-Server (=video-driver) and your video-adapter-card.
I dont know your distro Corel Linux , how and if it finds out the
appropriate X-Server for your video-adapter. You should supplement your
posting with some more data about your system, as type of cpu, video-card
etc. So there might be some people experienced with Corel Linux can give
more advice to you.
If you login merely in a ext-console I have no idea what could be the reason.

Hi,

I would like to know if somebody know why every time I boot, when the
sound modules are loaded, I ear a huge and very annoying noise. I remarked
that this happens even if I remove the sound modules and the reload them.
In particular, it happens when the sb.o module is loaded. I also noticed
that after having loaded such module the (default) values for the mixer
are very high. At boot this is fixed by the sound init script, which set
the values to the ones I have choosen.

I have a SoundBlaster 64 AweGold and a RedHat 6.0, but the kernel is
2.2.12 (it seems to depend on the SB, since I have gone through many
different kernels).

Thank you

Hi there.
You cannot trace any packets on eth0, because the local network traffic
isnt routed over the ethernet card. All internal traffic goes through
the loopback interface of your box (a pseudo network interface).
You can trace it by typing:
tcpdump -i lo

Depends on your distro
in SuSE, you would have to replace id:3:... with id:2:...
You can also switch from X to a textmode console by pressing
Alt-Ctrl-[F1...F6]

I'm getting the point.

I guess I'm still used to the slow, geologic time, paced evolution of
Windows, even though I have used Linux on my home systems exlusively
for over a year now.

When you rebuild the kernel, you just get used to things working
fine.

Does there exist a model by which a binary standard and kernel
interface could be created so that kernel loadable modules could be
practical in binary form without harming the progress of the kernel?

I have a friend that claims Linux is useless because it doesn't
support hardware and software that he uses. The software argument
could be solved by creating more multi-media type software. The
hardware is a more difficult issue.

As said earlier in this thread, the vendors don't want their hardware
used by Linux. If they did, they would release full specifications so
that the people who like to write drivers would do so. Then the
people who like to write applications would use the hardware.

I know the arguments about monolithic vs micro kernels was dealt with
way back in '91 on the comp.os.minux group. I also haven't read
through Alessandro Rubini's book on Linux Device Drivers yet. Is that
book still useful? I think that writing device drivers is hard. The
Linux kernel should be architected in such a way to make maintenance
of driver code easier. As the kernel moves forward and incorporates
new ideas, techniques, optimizations, etc, I think it should become
more modular. I think certain API's should become more stable if that
can be done without hindering progress.

You have to do the following:
mkswap /dev/hdxx (<-- your swap partition)
and then
swapon /dev/hdxx
or make sure /etc/fstab contians a correct line for the swap partition
