I didn't see any initial ramdisk listed (see mkinitrd). So if the kernel
needs to know how to use the adaptec controller, it would probably have
to be compiled into the kernel, rather than as a module. The old
chicken-and-egg dilemma...if the module is on a scsi drive, and it needs
a module to know how to read the scsi drive...
So does the kernel have sufficient driver setup provided to it in some
way? If not, lilo is telling it to tie a noose around its neck, and jump
off the chair. And it is doing it.

Subject: set PS1 under KDE
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 16:12:31 +0800
I am using Red hat 6.2,and ksh as my default shell. I modify the profile and
add
PS1='${pwd}:> '
export PS1
When I login in command-line mode,I will get what I want:the prompt is set to
the current directory.
When I login in KDE mode and open an terminal in KDE,it seems that PS1 is
empty.but from the screen information during the loginning,I see that
etc/.profile really was executed.
Any suggestion about this.
Thanks in advance for you help.

Is there a shell utility to add a user to a group? I know usmod -G
almost does the job, but instead of adding the user to a group, it
modifies the user's group settings.
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
In Redhat the command is: useradd -G group
Where 'group' is the group you wish to add the user too. You may also add
the user to multiple groups by separating the groups with a comma.

Thanks Jim. Yeah it works if you add a new user to the group. What about
adding an existing user to the group?
BTW, it should be "usermod -G" in my previous post. Damn typo. :)

Fu,
I recently fixed a problem I was having with both the sound card and
network card on my new linux box and you may be having the same
trouble. It could be a problem with IRQs not being assigned properly.
Take a peek at the file /proc/pci This tells you the IRQs and I/Os etc
of your pci devices. If this is the case, you are in good shape,
because you can tell whether there is an IRQ conflict or if one is being
assigned at all. If there is not one listed, it is probably not being
assigned. If this is the case, wander into the bios and look for a
setting for PnP OS support. If you have (had) Windows, this is probably
set to Yes, set it to No. Don't worry, if this is a dual boot, it won't
screw up Windows, it should work just fine, and if not, you can always
change it back. Hope this helps. If it is an IRQ conflict, here is the
page that helped me figure out the problem and fix it:

I am using a perl script to read the output of ps using:

Now this works when I run the script from the prompt and I can use the

return anything. This is also true with top but I get the error:
top: tcgetattr() failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Have you run depmod? This will create the modules dependency file in the
appropriate place (unless your 2.4.0 modules are somewhere else).
man depmod

It's a good quality monitor. Might be improbable but it's true :)

It's a 21" and I only really use the 1600x1200 mode, the others are too
small.

My problem is that the mode lines that I *DO* want cause my monitor to
shut down.

I know. I should have said that ctrl-alt-F1-F6 don't give me back a
console and that ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't kill the X server.

The backspace key is the one with the back-arrow. ctrl-alt-F1 didn't
give me console either.

In my RH6.2 distribution I just type Xconfigurator and it launches a
text based GUI for configurating you video card and X server. Sort of an
xconfig86 but much simpler to use.
