A simple way is to use nfs to allow your linux file systems to be mountable
from an NT or Windows 95/98 machine. To perform the backup, just mount the
directories and then use any Windows backup program that offers password
protection. If you have a slow network this may take a while, but at least
it will be secure.
Another way would be to perform a cpio backup to tape on the linux box (tar
is never a very good idea and the only reason it is still around is that
there is a lot of legacy support for it) and then share that drive with an
NT/Win95/98 box and copy the cpio file to a tape backup with password
protection and then erase the tape that has the cpio file.

Update to the newest bind 8.x version BIND 8 has a history of being not
100% stable.
That's why alot of people still run 4.9 wich is very very stable. (Accept
you miss a few nice features that bind 8 has).

I've installed RedHat 6.0 on a Sparc. Since I'm used to glint and it seems
no longer included I just installed glint-2.6.2-1 from the RH 5.2
distribution. However, when I start glint it immediately terminates. Does
it no longer work with RH 6.0?

Then you use an old 2.0.x kernel config file. That;s the cause.
Just build one new config from scratch since the config file of the
2.2.x kernel is a whole lot different thatn with the 2.0 kernels.

It appears that obsolete (pre-/proc fs) versions of ps and top use it,
and perhaps the module loader.

When I don't, the thing that builds module dependencies at boot time

No. /sbin/lilo builds what ever you tell it to, with the map=
command. Proofread your

One of the reasons the LILO mini-HOWTO is out of date is that I have never
seen any documentation about the Linuxdoc format. I've written other HOWTO
maintainers and they have told me they couldn't find any, either, and
just imitated other HOWTOs. That's a process that requires reading enough
HOWTOs to find a representative set of commands. I've got time enough to
revise a HOWTO but not to reverse engineer forty others to figure out
how to use the tool. I found some Docbook stuff, but never anything that
describes the differences between Docbook and Linuxdoc.
Are they the same thing?
Is Linuxdoc being phased out in favor of Docbook?
Is there a reference card or tag listing somewhere?
Does the "SGML-ToolsUser'sGuide" mentioned in the sgmltools manpage exist?
Where?
The sgmltools manpage says there is a "small family of" markup languages.
Which one do the HOWTOs use, and how do I specify that one when invoking
the sgmltools programs?

Wrong. As soon as you link statically there is no difference between

What you say is technically true, but not the whole story; you're
missing important points. See below.
ud> Wrong. As soon as you link statically there is no difference
ud> between GPL and LGPL anymore.
This is absolutely _NOT_ true.
Even a program statically linked with an LGPL'd library does _NOT_
require the release of source code, as a GPL'd library would.
The LGPL _DOES_ require, in a nutshell, that you be willing to make the
program available in a form that allows it to be linked with a new
version of the LGPL'd library. If you link statically this typically
means you need to be willing to provide a "link kit" (a bunch of .o's or
similar) that can be linked with the LGPL'd library. See section 6 of
the LGPL for full details.
This is quite different from what the GPL requires.

deplorable answer on a linux ng. First of all, they can, they just don't
want to. And why - might they be afraid their competitors could improve
upon their code? Isn't this the way linux has improved over the years
without making anyone big money but with great results in terms of quality
and service to users. Why don't you let that guy hire a lawyer to find
out. Just my 2 cents,
Gerald

Try using XF86Setup that lets you tune a lot more features then the
Xconfigurator of RedHat.
(You might need to install the RPM for that)

I was considering something that could have some kind of .conf file,
where the commands could be changed, added, and edited. I think it
could be totally customizable in that way, you could keep it as simple
as cp, mv, rm, mkdir, rmdir, and chdir, or you could add tar, or gzip,
run programs, or execute other utilities...I just came up with that.
How does that sound?
