Hi,

what are the mail servers available for the linux platform. Either
IMAP or POP.

Thanks

Ok I'm now on php-4.0.4 but httpd still wont start it's now saying that
"libphp4.so is garbled - perhaps this is not an apache module DSO?". It
seemed to configure and make fine.

Any Ideas?

Okay, here's the deal. I am running XFree 4.0.2 with a 16 meg NVidia TNT. The drivers
that come with XFree work just fine. They DO NOT support the 3D capabilities of the
card, though. If you want to play Quake or Tux Racer, you need to use the NVidia
drivers. Be happy that you can do the XFree upgrade and have a working system before
you do the NVidia driver thing!
*sigh* I really need to install them myself for better play in SimCity3000...

I suggest you use Printtool (try "printtool &" at a command prompt) to
configure your printer. Once you've configured it the command is "lpr
-P <printername> <file>"

The 30-90 seconds thing sounds like a DNS (or other) timeout. Something
to look at, perhaps ... This is a fairly familiar problem, especially
regarding Netscape.

Check you /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts etc.

Well, found it. Ctrl-Home goes to the home directory. Home goes to
top of the page. At least on KDE 2.1beta.

firewall for newbies to experts:

           http://www.pointman.org/PMFirewall/

then add portsentry, links and EZ setup guide is here:

http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/security/portsentry1.html

Before d/l'ing and installing, check and see if you don't already
have one or both of these, and/or if your distro provides packages.
Both are very popular, highly regarded, and often included, specially
portsentry.

Although direct writing to /dev/lp0 is one way to print, it's not the
best way. You want to install and configure one of the lineprinting
tools, such as 'lpr/lpd', 'lprNG', or 'CUPS'. You'll also probably
want to install a print filter tool, such as 'apsfilter' or
'magicfilter'.

It's not a difficult job; most distros install these tools, leaving
them up to you to configure. You might want to check your distro's
documentation, and you should read the Printing-HOWTO available at the
Linux Documentation Project (http://www.linuxdoc.org/)

One way would be to run

somescript 2> logfile & tail -f logfile

If you wish to merge stdout and stderr, you can do something like

somescript 2>&1 | tee logfile

Perhaps your shell can let you pipe stderr somewhere and leave stdout
alone; I have never looked into that.

I will make up a syntax and pretend it works.

somescript 2| tee logfile

But I do not know if any shell accepts something like this.

Thanks for reading this,

I am trying to mount (dev/sda4) a Zip 100 USB drive under Kernel 2.2.16
(Suse 7.0). The modules usbcore, usb-ohci and usb-storage are loaded, but
yet the system fails to communicate with the Zip drive. While booting up the
system it finds the Zip drive. The error message is:

sda: Read Capacity failed
sda: status=0, message=00, host=7, driver=00
sda: sense not available
sda: block size assumed 512 bytes, disk size 1 GB

       sda: scsidisk I/O Error: dev08:00, sector 0
              unable to read partition table.

My USB Sony CD/RW drive is also seen but can not be mounted. I think it is a
SCSI issue, which I have tried to remedy with the insertation of module sg,
but that did not help either. Perhaps somebody has an advice for me, any
input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

Yes, you can.

Here's how I set up a share in my
/etc/smb.conf file on a Linux machine with a
/pub/tmp directory:

# A publicly accessible directory, read/write
# to all users. Note that all files created
# in the directory by users will be owned by
# the default user, so any user with access
# can delete any other user's
# files. Obviously this directory must be
# writable by the default user. Another user
# could of course be specified, in which case
# all files would be owned by that user
# instead.
[tmp]
   path = /pub/tmp
   public = yes
   only guest = yes
   writable = yes
   printable = no
   create mask = 0666

My Linux machine's name is delta, so each
Windows 9X, NT, and 2000 client maps a drive
letter to \\delta\tmp

(I also share the same directory with other
Linux & Solaris boxes via NFS.)

Refer to Samba documentation for a lot more
detail.

Hello,

I just went through the nightmares of installing PHP with ADABAS support today,
every time
there is something different, you have to change in one of the odbc header
files......:-(

Have you read the INSTALL file which comes with PHP?

QUICK INSTALL (DSO)

For this to work your Apache httpd must have mod_so enabled.
Check using httpd -l. You should see something like:

Compiled-in modules:
  http_core.c
  mod_so.c

Did you set:

--with-apxs=/where_your_apache_sits/bin/apxs ??

Good luck

My favorite method of deleting all entries in a directory (when the
number of entries is very large) is

tar cfv /dev/null /path/of/directory/to/empty --remove-files >
/dev/null

and then just rmdir the directory if required....
