I not sure what you're trying to say here,
probably the command 'startx' after you've logged in is what you're looking
for...
Funny, I thought that Corel Linux automaticly configured a x-windows login,
maybe something went wrong during the install, try 'cat /var/log/install.log
| less' or something similar.

Well,

can't tell you were to change this behavoir, maybe in /etc/profile, your

DOS got started, and came to dominate the market, early on.
Yes, *eventually* apple and others put out OS's which used GUI,
but by then, DOS had a demanding lead, and lots of software
available. I'm sorry that you don't seem to be able to grasp the
difference between capturing a new and emerging market, and
grabbing one which has already developed and is dominated by
one company.

Many thanks to all who tried to help me.
I was able to solve the problem.
The os9 machine in the "sysgo.c" was mounting the nfs disk as :
"mount ServerName:SHOME /os9root -m"
This seemed to work, but ... the machine was hanging later.
I have found that modifying this line in the following way :
"mount ServerName:SHOME /os9root -m -r=1024 -w=1024"
solves the problem.
I am able now to boot the os9 machine without problems.
Best regards,
Jacek.

Gutentach!
Well a luck I live nearby and can read it......
You don't HAVE to do partioning like that, If you only need to use the c
compiler and/or other compilers you can safely use 1 partition for linux.
Normally a partitioning scheme is only used on servers with many users. The
/boot partition is a safe thing, you must keep it below the first 1024
cylinders to avoid booting problems, then you can configure any partition
you want....
Probable this will do:
/boot 20 MB below 1024th cyl.
/ 2 gig for everything else.(is probably enough for gcc and
other compiler, or choose more if you plan to use x-windows etc..
Ciao,
Axel
You can configure lilo to boot other osses as well.

That's a lot of partitions! I usually have
1. C (2G in case of FAT) or > 2 for FAT32
2. LINUX swap according to the mem size
3. /boot ~ 32MB
4. ext
4.1 /
4.2 /export
put in export opt and home ( /export/home and /export/opt) and use the
automounter to generate /home/<user> or /opt/<appl>
that makes it easier in case you expand to a network or just shift
around.

Hi all,
I have two hard drives, and a perfect (slaved over for days) linux
installation on the slowest one. I've copied it's partition to the new
faster drive and can access it under the Mandrake rescue disk. But I
have no GRUB bootloader, and can't use lilo because of the 1024 cyls

It took Microsoft nearly 4 times that long to come out with

Bullshit.
Microsoft's "lead" was miniscule compared to the amount of
time they sandbagged on fully exploiting the 386 architecture
or delivering a viable GUI.

Look and feel is definitely a part of quality, but it's way down on the
list of importance. Most windows programs have a nice look and feel
(not much choice if you use the windows API), but are otherwise ridden
with bugs. But, all other things being equal, you can bet I'll take the
application that looks nicer.
Acrobat reader is one example of a program that constantly crashes or
simply doesn't work on windows, but never gives me problems hp-ux.
(Haven't tried it yet on linux, since I like xpdf.)

Everybody needs to know a little vi. Not a lot, but enough to

Hi,
I installed an Adaptec 2940U2W card in a Red Hat 6.1 system and
attached a Quantum DLT drive to it. On bootup, SCSI card BIOS detected
the drive fine but none of the backup commands worked. I always get
erorrs saying no such device at /dev/st0. /var/log/dmesg has nothing to
say about the Adaptec card. Does this mean that the system can't see
the card as well as the attached drive?
The card does not come with drivers for Linux but I was told that 'RH
6.1 knows about the card'.
Do I have to install any driver for the tape drive to work properly.

Really. I was happily using os/2, with 32 bit pre-emptive multithreading
multitasking it's wonderfull WPS GUI while mickysoft users were using that
pathetic windoze 3.1 running a top dos with nearly nonexistant
multitasking. OS/2 ran dos sessions in V8086 boxes well enough to fool
a windoze 3.1 instalation to run win31 apps perfectly except those that
had to bypass all the microsoft crap and talk directly to the hardware like
communications programs.
7 years later and MS is finally getting around to dumping DOS, but needs
16 times the processor and memory to achive the same results.
Not impressed.

Yes. Add this line to /etc/conf.modules:
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
and reboot.
Be sure to regenerate your boot floppy (via mkbootdisk) afterwards, so
it will be able to access any SCSI devices.
If you plan on booting from a SCSI hard drive, be sure to also generate
an initrd file (via mkinitrd) after doing this, so that your ramdisk
will have the SCSI driver in it - then update LILO before rebooting.
(If you don't require any files on any SCSI drives at boot time, then
this last step is optional.)

I guess you do the following to get root :
$ su
Instead, in this case you should do
$ su -
Note the '-' (see man su) or go to a virtual console and log in from there.
What happens is, that ordinary users don't have /sbin in their PATH, whereas
(I'm pretty sure) root has it. .... *IF* you execute root's .profile :-)

Depends :) On SuSE it isn't - it does network in level 2. I can't speak for
others. Traditionally, level 2 was never networking...in the days of yore
on UNIX boxen, the runlevels were:
0. Bring machine to a halt (as it still is)
1. Single user mode (though linux uses 'S' for that really)
2. Multi-user, no networking (unlike SuSE)
3. Multi-user, networking
4. Wasn't really used
5. Wasn't really used, but got taken as the XDM run-level until
vendors decided to start XDM/CDE at run-level 3 if there
was a graphics-capable console connected
6. Reboot (which it still is)
but these can change (all it takes is a hacking of the rc<x>.d directories)
as a vendor or adminsitrator sees fit... :)

Hate to ask as this has probably been covered previously but I would

Thanks in Advance,
Adam
