You are correct, I checked and there was a later version of kppp. There
were notes that said that with the 2.2.14 kernel there was a change
which caused the error that I had.

I had the same problem, get the latest version of kppp (I have kernel
2.2.14) The latest version of kppp fixes this.

Hello,
I'm cleaning up/removing unneeded Plug-Ins
for Netscape Communicator 4.72 (glibc version). I'm
pretty much done, except I need help with some files
from my "/opt/netscape/plugins" sub-dir:
/opt/netscape/plugins
RAObserver.class (RealPlayer)
RAPlayer.class (RealPlayer)
ShockwaveFlash.class (Shockwave/Flash)
cpPack1.jar (??? what uses this ???)
libflashplayer.so (Shockwave/Flash)
libnullplugin.so (Null Plug-In)
plugger.so (Basic MIME Plug-In)
What uses cpPack1.jar?
I also downloaded and installed RealPlayer 7-Beta.
It put the following files in my
"$HOME/.netscape/plugins" sub-dir:
$HOME/.netscape/plugins
raclass.zip (RealPlayer)
rpnp.so (RealPlayer)
Does this mean I can remove "RAObserver.class" and
"RAPlayer.class", above?
System Background:
SuSE Linux 6.3
Netscape Comm 4.72 (glibc, 128 bit encryp)
RealPlayer 7-Beta LiveConnect Plug-In
Shockwave/Flash 4.0r12 Plug-In
Plugger 3.2 Plug-In
Acrobat Reader 4.0 as "Helper Application"
Any info is much appreciated...
Thank You and Best Regards,

Get yourself a copy of PartitonMagic from PowerQuest. (About $60, the best
investment I ever made). Create a rescue disk and boot from that. Copy your
partitons over, then resize them to whatever size you want.
Note: If the new HD is not going to be the same device (/dev/hda?) as the
old one, you will have to edit your fstab to reflect the new locations. If
you know in advance how you want it you should be able to do it beforehand,
but I would probably copy the partitons first, then boot from a Linux
rescue floppy, mount the (new!) partition containing /etc and then edit it.
You'll also have to reinstall LILO or use the BootMagic utility that comes
bundled with PartitionMagic.

Installed LInux now what?
Did you configure the X Server??
>From your description it seems that you got a text login.
That means that your system stated up in run level 3.
Before you set up X Windows, please make a user account . By all means try
to avoid using the 'root' account for anything other than system
maintenance.
Ok, here goes:
Make a group first . users have a user name, and a group that they belong
to.
Make a group called kangaroo, and then a user kangaroo1, and then set the
user's password
groupadd kangaroo (ENTER or RETURN)
useradd -g kangaroo kangaroo1 (ENTER or RETURN)
passwd kangaroo1 (ENTER or RETURN)
<enter the password twice>
Now, press alt+f2 . You should see another prompt (hint: alt+ (f 1- f6 are
6 consoles)
log in as the user you just created, kangaroo1
then at the command prompt type:
startx
et voila!!,
you're at the GUI!!!
How to exit X : try ctrl+ backspace or ctrl+alt+backspace .Ofcourse, this is
a very ugly way and may cause a core dump!!
Better to logout.
That logout will log you out of the Graphical User Interface, and bring you
back to the command prompt where you started X with startx
before getting into X, some useful info on rh files.
X configuration file is in /etc/X or /etc/X11 ( I can't remember clearly)
to find out, type "cd /etc/X" and then hit the tab key. Tab tries to auto
complete the path. if there is more than one match, it will be silent. Then
hit tab twice to see all the matches. If there are no matches, it will beep!
Well, in that directory, there should be a file "XF86Config"
This is what controls your Graphical system.
As for documentation, I would first suggest putting that install cd into an
other computer in an os you are familiar with and go through the
documentation in the docs folder. If that does not help , head over to
tucows

Not sure , but cppack1.jar is a part of the regular netscape
distribution. (and it would hold some java classes I
suppose). Did you happen to install the "Netscape calendar"
option? Oh never mind. I see what it is. It's for the
netscape composer function so you might have problems even
with netscape email if you get rid of it.

Subject: segmentation fault & other crashes
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 20:01:23 -0500
I'm using SuSE 6.2 on a socket 3 mobo with a 586/133 and 32 MB of FP RAM
as a router between my LAN and the Internet.
Problem: From time-to-time the system crashes. Sometimes it informs me
about a "segmentation fault" (no matter what I try to do, even something
as innocuous as pine). Sometimes it won't even do that and just freezes.
The most mysterious is when I get a login prompt (even though I'm
already logged in). I enter my username and password and get another
login prompt!
The only way I have found to correct it is to reboot (usually a hard
reboot involving forced checks, etc.).
I have a socket 5 mobo with a Pentium 120, and up to 80 MB of FP RAM
I'm planning to install, but I only have a few hours a night after work
to mess around and I can't be offline for days.
I need to know if:
1) swapping the mobo/CPU will cure my problem.
2) doing so will require reinstalling Linux.
Additional config info: I tried to optimize performance by splitting the
work between 3 HDs.
/dev/hda (1 GB) has /boot, /, /usr, and a small (32 MB) swap partition.
/dev/hdb is the CD-ROM
/dev/hdc (1.7 GB) is /home, and
/dev/hdd (1 GB) is /opt and another (128 MB) swap. (The latter 2 are
running off an add-on IDE controller card.)
All the HD's are rather old, and I'm afraid the segmentation fault might
be caused by one of them. The BIOS is old enough that it can't handle
modern HD sizes, and there's no way I'm paying $70+ for a new 2 (or even
4) Gig disk when 10 GB's are selling for $100. Besides, I have plenty of
disk space on my other boxes.
I'm not even running X windows, so that can't be the problem either.
An email reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be appreciated.

The *Public* keys only make sense with respect to a matching set of

Somewhere in your system the ls command is defaulting to 'ls -F'
Basically, '/' means it's a directory, '*' means it's executable, '@'
means it's a symlink. There's probably some environment variable,
LSOPTIONS, or something like that which is setting this. I have no idea
where it gets set.

See answer to 1.

I'm not too familiar with either RH or X, but look in your home (/root
for root user) directory. Do a 'ls -al' There should be some .X?????
files there. Specifically, look at .Xclients-default or .Xdefaults. I
think maybe you can change your window manager from there. But you need
to have the window manager installed for it to actually work. You might
take a look at any X HOWTO documents you can find. Very helpful.

Read the FAQ, eh? Since you provided so little information, there's not
much I can tell you other than to try this:
Get a Linux rescue disk and boot from it. Then,
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
This will zero out the MBR, bypassing the brain-damaged DOS FDISK entirely
and making Winblows think the drive has absolutely nothing on it.
Installation afterwards should be a matter of booting from the Winblows
CD, and waiting, and waiting, and rebooting, and suffering...
