That's right. This feature has been disabled in the Linux kernel on
 purpose, because
setuid scripts are almost always a
security hole. Sudo and SuidPerl can provide more security than
setuid scripts or
binaries, especially if execute permissions
are limited to a certain user ID or group ID.

If you want to know why setuid scripts are a security hole, read the

Vilmos,

Great advice! I checked and there's a ton of files with a hyphen as their
first character. I thought maybe I had done that, but no! The files were in
there already.

Why I didn't go back a directory and check to see if chown would work with
wildcards there I have no idea. I did go back to another directory and chown
works fine. It was just a diabolical coincidence that I entered that
buggered-up chown command as my first act in that directory.

Thanks for the help!

I am using Mandrake 7.1 . Netscape doesn't display dynamic fonts. I've
tried all the usual to-dos - my preferences are set to display dynamic
fonts, the pfr mimetype is defined ( although the action taken is defined
as "Prompt User" ) and I've cleared the cache and reloaded the page
several times. I'm getting mad at this - my SGI netscape at work works
fine! Somebody please help me...

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get my scanner working with SANE using the plustek backend

./obj.user/genericio.o ./obj.user/dac.o ./obj.user/p48xx.o

./obj.user/image.o ./obj.user/map.o ./obj.user/models.o
./obj.user/transform.o -o plustek_scan
/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lz: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

What exactly is ld referring to when it says it can't find -lz ?

How would I go about fixing this ?

I grabbed the source and compiled it ... works great. When I used to run
Windows, I used MS Money, and I find that I enjoy GNUCash much more. Its
layout seems to make a bit more sense to me.

Install zlib, available in most distributions, or you can get it directly

Try using one of those scripts on Freshmeat [www.freshmeat.net] that
synchronize your clock to a time server, it'll most likely be easier and
more accurate.

Hi,

The clock on my linux (Red Hat Linux 6.1 Cartman, Kernel 2.2.12-20 on an
i686)
is one hour late. I want to adjust the clock to current.

I did read HOWTO and man hwclock, I tried the following, but it didn't
work:

/sbin/hwclock --set --date="6/29/00 6:27:00"

It didn't give me any error, I also did:

/sbin/hwclock --hctosys

nothing happened. Then I shutdown the machine:

shutdonw -h now

and powered it on again, the clock didn't get changed.

My hardware is DELL Dimension XPC R450

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks,

Lily

Better get the tar ball, or the .src.rpm instead of the Bug
Hat's .rpm.

*You'll need some dependence files. I don't have the file
names off hand, but if you get the tar ball, it's listed in
there.

>From a terminal:-

The easiest way is to use the tar ball. Untar it, then cd to
/where_you_untar/to , do a ./configure , then a make , it'll
tells you if you have all the required files. If not, get
them, install them first , and repeat the ./configure, make
process; then, if all goes well,m do a make install (you
need to su to root for this step), then do a make clean to
clean up.

If you use the .src.rpm, first cd into /where-the file-is/,
do a
rpm --rebuild filename.src.rpm, then do a rpm -i
filename.rpm (su to root for this)

Better to buy the book "Linux in a Nut Shell" . You'll need
it sooner or later, if you want to master Linux. Or if you
have "Unix in a nut shell" can do too, most are

I'll have to experiment most of the stuff I got here, including that 'dd

Were you logged in as root when you ran hwclock? If so, try setting
the time in your CMOS setup. I highly recommend installing a time
synchronization package to take care of it for you after that point.
I hear xntp is good, but I prefer chrony. It maintains clock accuracy
even when the network is not up, can compensate for long periods
when the machine is turned off, and can even set the hardware clock
on many linux systems.

Make sure you do not run getty on /dev/cuab. Run getty on /dev/ttyS1.
If you do not shorten ready lines on the connector, program getty
to activate "clocal" mode. It's getty specific, so refer to your
manual. I use agetty with -L flag:

S0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100

Use of call-up devices in Linux is deprecated.

install, set up, maintain and stable.

Once set up, I can just leave it along, until I want to
upgrade something.

If I want to make my life more difficult, I'd use Windoz, or
Red Hat-Linux... :-|

Yes, you'll notice from boot up till you run out of
resources completely. Hotmail.com, www.cdrom.com, Intel
(heard that one of the Intel's server running FreeBSD stayed
up for 75,000 hours-then it crashed because of hardware
failure.) etc won't use FreeBSD without good reasons. ;-)

Get the kernel source. I'm not sure about your card, but
I've found some supported items inside the kernel source
that isn't listed in the database yet. :)

And building the kernel with FreeBSD is *VERY* simple and
easy. Piece of cake.

You can also try NetBSD, OpenBSD.:)

The hardware detection with FreeBSD put most Linux distros
(other than SuSE 6.4) to shame...

Do a 'man date'.

# date 062906272000.00

(6/29/2000 06:27:00)

Then:

# hwclock -w
