It depends mostly on how "far" do you want to go: from home-grown
solutions, if it's for a simple task, to full blown management
solutions, either free, like Zope or Ars Digita, or commercial, kindof
WebSphere extensions, Vignette or the like.

Please help me.
I currently use a software from a firm that use Access as database. I have a
linux server that do file server, print server, ip masquerading (gateway
internet-local lan). This works vey well.
The firm that produce this software decided to use only MSDE or MSQLServer
as database on the next version.
Is there a way to not install windows nt on my linux server?
It is possible to run MSDE or MSQLServer under linux? (wine??)
Do you know if I can use postgres as database instead of MSDE or MSQLServer?

I don't think that using VMWare to make NT run on a linux server would
provide a good solution, if that software use *for real* MSDE or
SQL Server (it use Stored Procedures, trigger and the like), you
should be able to "emulate" the Server using another Database Server
like Oracle, but it's a wild guess and it require all the possible
assistance by the programmer of that software.
I suggest you to ask to that firm if a porting under Oracle is
possible or start looking for another software.
Unless, of course, you want to add an NT server only for SQL Server/MSDE.

It's really a security feature, and it's documented in the OUTPUT
section of the lsof man page.
"Lsof only outputs printable ASCII characters. Non-printable
characters are printed in one of three forms: the C
``\[bfrnt]'' form; the control character `^' form (e.g.,
``^@''); or hexadecimal leading ``\x'' form (e.g.,
``\xab''). Space is non-printable in the COMMAND column
(``\x20'') and printable elsewhere."
For example, names with backspaces in them are sometimes used to hide
the true name of the file or process.
Lsof prints a character only when isprint(3) returns true. If
isprint(3) returns false, lsof prints the character in one of the forms
described above.

I was mistaken about escape sequences at the Brother website. A link is

Hi all,
I have installed Suse 7.1 (prof) on my new Compaq 1700 presario laptop
(installed both the 2.4 and 2.2.4 kernels).
Apart from the modem/network card not responding (it is one of those silly
winmodems things and 'soft' lan card), I cannot seem to get the boot loader
to recognise APM.
I have checked the BIOS and indeed I do not have any mention of APM in there
(hence why the boot loader doesn't see it)
Being a relative novice in the linux world would anyone have any advice - I
would dearly love to be able to halt or shutdown the laptop without having
to hold the power button down (and I have no battery perfromance monitors
(because APM is not installed)).
If I could get the above things resolved then I can finally give Win2k the
big boot

Try recompile the kernel enabling the APM and the "use APM call to
shutdown the machine". It worked for me. See also on www.linux-laptop.net

Subject: Upgrade kernel?
Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 12:58:38 GMT
I am running Redhat 6.0 with the kernel that comes with it: 2.2.15-15.
I want to install the MPPE upgrade to pptpd so that my VPN will support
MSCHAP V2. My pptpd VPN works fine right now without the MSCHAP.
QUESTIONS #1: So I obtained the Redhat PoPToP HOW-TO from poptop.lineo.com.
It says that I should upgrade the kernel to 2.2.12-20 by getting
"kernel-2.2.12-20.i386.rpm" from the Redhat site. I tried this but the page
always comes up "not found". Does anyone have a link where I can get this
file?
QUESTIONS #2: When you upgrade a Linux kernel can you upgrade to any newer
kernel? For example, can I upgrade to the latest and greatest kernel
available, or can I only go so far without causing system incompatibilities?
If I upgraded to a kernel used in Redhat 7.0 would it work with my Redhat
6.0 installation?
QUESTIONS #3: Any tips or caveats on upgrading the kernel would be much
appreciated because I've never done it before. Also, in the Redhat PoPToP
HOW-TO they say that you should "Change lilo.conf to access your old and new
kernel then issue this command: [/sbin/lilo]." But I don't have a lilo.conf
(I just have an /sbin/lilo). Why do you need to change a lilo.conf?
Thanks in advance,

Your kernel is already newer than that, so you don't need to upgrade.

Sometimes you have to upgrade other things around (binutils, modutils
and the like), every kernel have a list of "changes" that states what
have been changed and what you need to upgrade to have the new kernel
working.
> QUESTIONS #3: Any tips or caveats on upgrading the kernel
Read the Kernel-HOWTO, and remember to keep your old kernel around
until you are not sure that the new kernel is working OK...
> But I don't have a lilo.conf
look into /etc

That file contains information about what kernel to start when you
boot your machine, if you want to modify your kernel (keeping your
old one available), you have to add a new kernel to the configuration.
See the lilo-howto.

The only "virus protection" you need is to keep your software updated and your
workstation properly configured. Read the Security-HOWTO. There are many other
security tutorials available. Go to www.google.com/linux and enter security. If
you're connected to the network full-time, install portsentry and snort.

YM `non-existent' in practice; watch out for Trojans, though. Not
that security isn't important (it is, very); you might want to think
about firewalls, intrusion detection (tripwire & the like), and so on.

Hi all,
My master drive recently died. I had (dual) win98 and linux installed
on this machine and used LILO as my boot manager. I removed the
broken drive, switched my slave drive to master, and tried to boot
with a win98 startup disk, but it won't boot! I think it has
something to do with the LILO boot manager that was installed. BIOS
detects everything correctly and about the time the LILO prompt used
to appear, the floppy and CD are briefly accessed, then the screen
goes blank with cursor in upper-left hand corner. Same thing happens
when trying to boot from CD. The boot order in the bios is correct.
Any clues?
Thanks,

The above info comes from /etc/issue.net IIRC, and is modified by one
of the Red Hat boot scripts. You'll want to edit the relevant script
(might be rc.local, but I'm not sure & I don't have access to a Red
Hat box) which will make the changes apply after boot, so you'll have
to edit /etc/issue.net to adjust the message (if you don't, it'll stay
as set until you next boot).

Subject: Missing OpenSSL libraries after build from source?
Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 10:01:43 -0400
I have a mix of source builds and RPMs on my server. I built openssl
0.9.6 from source six months ago, largely following the recipe in
"Securing and Optimizing Red Hat Linux" which is a finely-tuned 6.2
install.
Trying to upgrade Pine to 4.33 with Red Hat's RPM, it complains about
not having libcrypto.so.0 and libssl.so.0. Sure enough, those files
don't exist on my box.
I *do* have libcrypto.a and libssl.a in /usr/lib, but that's it. And
the documentation of the openssl build in the work above gives a file
list and does not mention the .so.0 libraries, and I didn't find any
reference to them or options that would control whether or not they were
built.
So: what to do?
I suppose I could remove my source build of openssl and install the RPM
as a replacement, which, I gather, *does* include those libraries, but
I'm a little nervous about doing that over an open ssh connection, and
it seems to me that that shouldn't be necessary. I could also build
Pine from source and get around these problems, but I'd like to actually
have those libraries if they're needed by the RPM.
Any ideas or tips? Did I build openssl wrong? Should a source build
create those libraries?
TIA,
Steve Linberg
