Or you can boot up with the rescue disk, and rerun lilo. I assume you
have the
boot=/dev/fd0
in /etc/lilo.conf.
mount your root file system somewhere once you have booted up with your
rescue disk. Run
lilo -f /root/etc/lilo.conf
( having put a floppy into the computer first) and you should now have
lilo on that disk.
Note that you do NOT need the full vmlinuz etc on that floppy. it can be
(as it is) on the hard disk and read from there. Why you would want to
boot from floppy I am not sure, but I will leave that to you.
In case that is not what you do, then edit /etc/lilo.conf.
Make it look something like this
boot=/dev/fd0
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-22mdk
label=linux
root=/dev/hda1
read-only
(In my case hda1 is the partition which contains the /boot directory,
vmlinux-2-2-13-22mdk is my kernel in /boot)
Then run lilo, with a floppy in the drive and the booter will be loaded
on the disk, but the booting (ie reading in of vmlinuz ) will take place
from the hard drive-- much faster than reading it from the floppy.

Subject: Soundcard 'sharing' possible?
Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 17:43:46 +0200
Is there a way to share my soundcard, so more than 1 program can use it at
the same time? I'm asking this because I cannot start gnome while I'm
playing an mp3 with mp3blaster. Once i quit mp3blaster, gnome continues to
load. Idem when i play a sound in gnome, i don't hear it until after the mp3
has stopped playing. In windows, i hear the sound through the mp3, so it is
definitely possible to do this. It's rather annoying right now, 'cause i
can't do anything else while listening to some music, since a lot of
programs play some sound when starting up (I've tried to disable sound in
gnome, but that didn't work and it's not really what I want either)
Thanks for all info!
PS: Debian Woody, Celeron 300, cmpci audio module, CMI8738/C3DX pci
soundcard, kernel 2.2.14, i'm a newbie

This is a redhat bug. Go get the updates from their updates site. While

them.

You may have a problem with how you setup your modem. Make sure that it
does not use software flow control. Or, if it does (I do not know how
those damn winmodems work-- how do you do hardware flow control with
them) try putting
asyncmap a0000
into /etc/ppp/options to make sure that it is not a control-S which is
stopping the flow. You must use that asyncmap if you use software flow
control.
]This is really strange. I've been through the set up several times, and I

]any references to in Linux, and that I had to set the DNS to a fixed address
]under Linux.
pppd uses IP header compression by default (called vj compression). You
could also use MSs "extention" with the usepeerdns option and then
getting your ip-up script to write the dns entries found from
/etc/ppp/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf. Not that it buys you anything.

Just wondering what it will affect our system and the passwords that are
currently encrypted in /etc/passwd when I upgrade our copy of Red hat
6.0 to Red Hat 6.2. I would like to implement shadow passwords with the
newer version though this was not done on the older version. How will
this affect the 200+ users currently using the system? Their passwords
are simply encrypted in /etc/passwd but I would like to get rid of that.

Hiya-
I'm using a hacked up RH 5.2/6.0/6.1 box with Netscape 4.7 and Yahoo
messenger seems to work out of the box (tho I don't usually use it, just
checked it out briefly).

Star Office and Applixware offer reasonable compatibility with
MS products. But keep in mind that the different versions of
MS Word and Excel are not even compatible with each other in
all circumstances. So it would be too much to expect complete
compatibility for non MS products. Try to convince your
coworkers to save their files in a universally readable format
like rtf. If they save documents in whatever their current
version of Word uses for internal format, which is usually the
default, you will have problems in some cases. However, they
should have no trouble reading you documents if you arrange
to save them in rtf format.

What do you mean "still doesn't see the internet" ?
a) Can't get to "www.yahoo.com"
OR
b) Cant get to 207.105.45.14 ?
OR
c ) Can't get to both?
Check :
1) Is NT forwarding dns requests if it is not running a dns ? ( port 53 I
think should be open) And have you specified the nameserver(s) in
resolv.conf on linux?
2) Is the NT computer specified as the nameserver in the linux computer's
resolv.conf file if it is running a dns server?
3) Check the netmask on NT's internal ethernet interface and on your linux's
ethernet interface : do they match? I'm thinking you use thernet cards to
connect NT & linux computers.

"but it still doesn't see the internet." ???
Check that Linux has the nameservers specified in the resolv.conf file.
If your NT box is hosting a DNS service , point it there.
If you rely on the ISP's name server, put that address in the resolv.conf
file .
Your NT box will then be configured to pass through queries on port 53 ( DNS
port I think )
Oh, I just had a thought : Are you using some program to do proxying on NT ?
In that case, you will have to follow that program's instructions!
good luck

slrn, tin, emacs, pine (textmode)
xrn, krn, Netscape Communicator (X)
slrn is very nice. Lightweight, more options than you can shake a stick
at, no X needed. However, it is absolutely essential that you RTFM
because its default colors look horrible and a couple of things aren't
immediately obvious. I don't bother with X-newsreaders these days because
slrn meets my needs so much more quickly.

It's really a matter of preference.
