I haven't added other servers yet because clock.psu.edu works when I try
a windows client from a Win98 machine on my internal network. That
machine connects to the net via IP masquerading and it's requests for
time service go through just fine! Now if I can just get the server to
work!

My redhat 6.1 box is suddenly acting very strange.
After being up for a random amount of time (5 minutes, 5 hours),
the system runs out of memory, init takes up 90% of processor,
all services now say [defunct] and shutdown -r now won't
restart the machine - only reboot -f will.
Any ideas?
My guesses are maybe hardware?
A memory leak? Only I'm curious why init starts to act so
strange.
The machine does not run any GUI, just sits and serves webpages
Thanks for any help.

This is a BIOS problem. I have found that if you turn off the power
management in the BIOS, all of the memory will be found by linux. This
has worked with AMI BIOS, the boxes I have with AWARD BIOS did not have
the problem.

Hi!
I need to set up a mail /web server at where I'm working, and after
thinking about it for a while, I thought it better to have a fault
tolerant set up. I sort of managed to determine what bits & pieces I'd
required... but putting it together is entirely another matter!!
I'd appreciate any help, pointers, advice, resources anyone could point
me towards.
The basic stuff are:
2 linux boxes, built-in dual channel SCSI RAID
1 load balancer
1 external RAID
RH Linux 6.2
(Mix well....ugghh)
What i need to do is to have the 2 Linux boxes to be identical, these 2
boxes access 1 set of data on the external raid. ie, there should be
only 1 set of mail app, mailboxes etc.
So these 2 boxes need to have their own OS? Can they share data?
A load balancer will determine which box gets the job etc. for a fault
tolerant setup.
How can I put everything together? Are there any extra special bits that
I require?
Is there a better way of doing this? ie, sharing data on 1 RAID
subsystem is a no-no?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
Bert

Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 23:01:12 GMT
I just installed 7.1 with a Promise Ultra66 and it works great. I
bought a SB Live! Value (2nd Version) and put it in the slot. I get a
kernel panic that says:
Kmod: Failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k blobk-major-33, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device 21:05
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 21:05
When I take the SB out, it boots fine. I thought maybe that the card
was blocking the Promise card, but the IRQ for the promise is 9 and the
SB is 11. I am just lost. Here is what I have on my system:
PCI IRQ (from bootup) IRQ (from Linux)
Viper V550 11 not listed
Adaptec 2940AU 10 10
Promise Ultra66 9 9
NE2000 ethernet card 9 not listed
SB Live! Value (just added) 11 ?
ISA
Intel Ethernet express 5 ?
I am lost! I want to use the Promise Ultra66, and I would like to use
the SB Live! Value. Can anyone help me?

I think xdrive allows you to access your drive via netscape.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Warren Jones)
When I start a Gnome session, I see these symptoms:
1. The file manager is hung, and doesn't repaint
itself after being obscured and then uncovered.
2. Desktop icons appear as blank masks,
and are not filled in.
3. Within about 60 seconds of logging in,
a pop-up appears with this message:
Warning: gmc
No response to the Save Yourself command.
The program may be slow, stopped or broken.
You may wait for it to respond or remove it.
4. "top" shows that gmc is using about 66%
of CPU cycles.
To see if perhaps my Gnome start-up files were corrupted,
I removed them from my home directory:
rm -rf ~/.gnome* ~/.enlightenment ~/.mc
These files were re-generated the next time I logged in,
but symptoms persisted.
I'm running Red Hat 6.2, and KDE works just fine, but I'd
like to be able to use Gnome too. Searching deja.com and
the bug database at www.gnome.org, I see that quite a few
other people have had similar problems, but no one has
posted a solution.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I also got the same error message when I upgrade my graphics card. However,
the problem can be easily solved. Reboot the computer with the installation
disk. When asked for installation method, just choose "Upgrade" (Using this
method will not destroy any data already in the partition). The purpose of
this is to force Mandrake to detect the cards and reinstall the bootloader.
Reboot the machine and you will get your Mandrake 7.1 running with your new
sound card.
Hope this helps!

Kudzu recognized & configured my modem on first boot, but now I see
no reason to leave it turned on.
What's the "proper" way to disable an rc script? I usually rename
the file from "S99xxx" to "s99xxx", but I don't know if there's
a better way.
Also, am I the only one who thinks that "kudzu" is a stupid name
for a piece of system software? I prefer names that *mean* something,
rather than having to read the source just to figure out WTF this
does.

You should probably use "ifup ethx" or "ifdown ethx" instead of
ifconfig... this will issue the proper route commands for you.

It's trying to look up the hostname of the gateway; if you do "route
-n" that hanging will stop.

This is beginning to sound like a configuration problem. Post back to
