FIrst, make sure you install the XF86_S3 Server. You should be able to
find it on your installation CD. If you don't know how, mail me back.
Second, XF86Setup isn't included with RedHat (unfortunately). RedHat
uses their own Xconfigurator (or mabye XConfigurator). Anyway, use that.
Third, xvidtune is an X application, so X has to be running for you to
use it. xvidtune is made for "tweeking" the video setup of X, not
actually setting it up.
The reason that X will only work in 320*200 is that you are using the SVGA
server. The 320*200 setting is the "common denominator" of most video
cards. I ran into the same problem with a Permedia II card using the
SVGA server. Unless your card is supported by the SVGA server, (yours
isn't) then 320*200 is the best you'll get with that server. Cards not
supported by the Server will still do 320*200. Switch to the S3 server.
(XConfigurator should do this automagically). That should solve your problem.
Running the Xconfigurator will produce a new XF86Config file, (and setup
the sim-link to your S3 server).
That should get you most of the way throught the setup, (and that setup
should be quite usable). At that point, you may wish to dick around
with the file by hand (to up the resolution/color depth, tweak the mouse,
add powersaving, etc.) If you need pointers to some good docs, let me know.
Hope this helps,
