Try taking a look at http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html That's
got a lengthy list of modems, along with whether or not they work under
Linux. If you want to be safe, pick one marked OK on that list and get
it.
BTW re the Winmodems - as I remember the original Winmodem (as in the
first one USRobotics put out) was an ISA unit. It's hard to tell
anymore what'll work. When I'm dealing with internals I always look for
jumpers as a clue - if the card has them it'll most likely work. Of
course, if it's an external it's easy - almost every external modem will
work. There was one or two that - amazingly enough - were software
modems, but I believe they were very limited production quite some time
ago. Any of the externals out there now should be just fine.
