I don't have a Cyrix 6X86 so I have no personal experience, but there
was quite a bit of traffic on the Red Hat list back when 5.0 was new
about problems compiling stuff on a 6x86. Apparently there is some
subtle incompatibility with that chip, and I recall that there was a
set of updated RPM files on redhat.com (somewhere) with a set of gcc
parts that avoided the problem. You may wish to go snoop around there.
The infamous "Signal 11" is definitely one of the symptoms of such problems.
