This time I removed all USB devices before booting.
The dmesg below starts after an ISOFS from the IDE-CDrom, the last entry before I plugged in the Freecom. It seems less verbose than before, when I "might" have been on the unpatched kernel, since it is not default in Lilo, but I think I did check "uname -a" yesterday, as I did today.
I set the verbose options on the patched kernel anyway.

No such file, after the Freecom hotplug has failed lsmod showed no usb-storage module.
It does look like the ehci_hcd needs fixing, as with Eeero's kernel.
I will now reboot with my Maxtor USB HDD in and see if it's different.
