I didn't see a lot of room for ambiguity there, as he named Gundam

Dude, when a Japanese, especially an older Japanese, speaks, there's
ALWAYS plenty of room for ambiguity. In Japan, even in East Asia in
general, leaving room for ambiguity is the civilized manner.
One very possible (but I admit unlikely) way to read it is that, he
doesn't really mean to criticize either Gundam or anime. It's all
(exaggerated) humility. If he sees himself as a sagely representative
of Gundam and/or anime, he's simply saying that "hey it's
entertainment, not high art, it doesn't justify all these things
otakus are doing" (e.g. spending >US$1 million on a full size
Tetsujin 28 statue). From the tone or choice of wordings in the
translation, I am not betting on this interpretation. But knowing
that subtlety is especially difficult to preserve in translations, I
absolutely can not rule it out.
This strikes me as quite an extreme statement; it's hard to imagine
how Miyazaki's works, for instance, could be "so much better."
Ok thank you for letting us know that you don't think there's much
room for improvement. Personally I think it would be a bit depressing
for young people studying to become anime artists. But hey... perhaps
you are right, it's as already good as it gets, all future animes are
just rehash of the same things and I might as well stop watching now.
But hey... you know, I've stopped watching a while ago already.
These are the cream of the crop, it's true, but you did say "the best
of anime." If you amended your statement to "most anime" or even
"nearly all anime" I'd be forced to agree, though.
I am very happy not to force you to agree to anything.

Don't defer to me on anything! Read the damn interview yourself and
make up your own mind.
This is why I try not to quote sniplets and sound bytes of other
articles and interviews. Follow the link and read the whole thing.
If you don't, well, you can count on a full dose of my distortion and
spin.
