But my point is that I don't forsee either kind of weapon (i.e. vibro blade or light saber) being used all that often because melee isn't likely to be common in any foreseeable future.  Ergo, there wouldn't be that many opportunities to snap the blade.

If melee WERE common, then sure there would probably be a good argument with picking the more advanced weapon.  But because, short of a MacGuffin, it's pretty hard to come up with a reason why melee would be that big of an issue, it's hard to justify the additional expense.

Maybe, maybe not. Don't forget that the blades of plasma sabers won't
break. If they're easy to maintain, the money you save on replacing
broken blades might offset the increased per unit cost. You just
can't make assumptions when it comes to these sorts of things,
particularly when we're talking about future tech. It's why you have
to focus first and foremost on the assumptions of the setting and
then extrapolate from there. Anything else is comparing apples and
pomegranates.
