It's actually not so bad in Gundam as it might be, given the nature of Minovsky physics. It's a MacGuffin, yes, but so long as one is willing to accept it the MS designs aren't that bad. In fact, they're more sensible than large-scale ship to ship combat, since the suits cost far less to build; why risk a ship to take out an enemy when you can use cheap suits instead?

Of course, even with the Minovsky excuse the suits still probably wouldn't be humanoid in nature. Even if you're limited to line of sight engagements, it's still better to just fly a pod or something than to bother with arms (and especially legs; useless things in space). But quibbling about that is like worrying about the gnat when you've already swallowed the whale.
