But given the fact that we have no clue what the story is behind the "GN Particles", floating is possible.  The Gundam flight systems more closely resemble some form of anti-gravity than they do the engines that we use today.

Another note -- we saw Setsuna do this (drop the shield to draw the saber) while fighting Graham in the air over the ocean, yet later during the same flight back to Japan he has the shield again. I guess it floats? I'd hate to go fishing through half the Pacific to find it if it sank...
