I disagree with Joseph in that I don't think we have a clear example
of DEM here.  At best it's borderline: the Takalaman "arc" appeared
out of nowhere, and after the entrance of the Throne Meisters (I like
this term, Jason, better than my GM3 and Joseph's RCB!) that event was
almost forgotten.  This is a case of disjointed and poor story
telling/pacing, not DEM.

If we are not precise, everything is DEM in SciFi.  E.g. Minovsky
Physics is DEM to create humanoid giant combat robots.  But in my mind
the Takalaman arc and Minovsky Physics is not DEM, since both have
been explored to various extent and provided additional entertainment
and/or plot development values.  E.g. watching Big 3 spanking CB
wasn't a totally painful experience (despite my previous complaints),
for the brief minutes when it lasted.
