I also note that today many folks do things that are not within the 
practice of  good seamanship, such as making long offshore passages with 
no celestial backup (sextant and tables and know how to use them) but 
they DO have a liferaft and EPIRB, they do these things because 
"everyone else does it" which is not a very good reason.

Heck, some couple came through here recently having crossed the Pacific 
with only one GPS for navigation....but they INSISTED on a new, heavy, 
expensive generator because "it was used by all their friends"! 
Just asking for trouble, IMHO.

Bad habits will extract the price sooner or later.

There is always a solution other than doing the same thing everybody 
else does.-Ken
