Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to the start of another week of Levy
Letters. I hope your day is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me
tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

As well as all the day’s news, on tonight's programme, we'll have the latest on
the ongoing parking row in Hull. I'll be putting your concerns to the city
council. More on that later.

Plus I'll have the exclusive pictures of the police's crackdown on illegal off
road bikes and mini motos in Scunthorpe. Many of them are uninsured and
unlicensed and police are now confiscating any found to be used illegally in
our neighbourhoods.

I'll be talking to the hottest band in Hull, who next month will be playing
alongside The Who in London and they’ll be performing for us on the programme.
We'll be with a shepherd as he prepares for the longest running sheep dog
trials in Lincolnshire. And it's Look North's one thousandth programme. We'll
be celebrating today and looking back to the early days. I hope you can join me
tonight.

Weekend

Whatever you had planned this weekend and whatever you got up to, then I hope
it went very well indeed. The weather was just appalling on Saturday. I know
there were a couple of shows on, which were just a complete washout. This
weekend was the Sea Shanty festival in Hull. Saturday was just dreadful for
rain, but it bucked up by Sunday lunchtime. And yesterday afternoon, there was
a great atmosphere down there. Well done to everyone, who took part and thanks
to those people I met and I had a great time down there at the Sea Shanty
festival at the Marina.

If you’re involved in an event, which is all in aid of a good cause and you’d
like a little plug, then let me know. Also, if you’re with an amateur group or
society and you’d like a mention in the Levy Letter, then drop me a line. If
you’ve got a problem too that you think I could help with in Leave it to Levy
on the programme, then send me the details. Also, leave a contact telephone
number as well. You can get me at any time, direct of course, no one else will
see it, to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Television

There were a couple of things to mention and one of them is Charlotte Church’s
chat show. I didn’t actually see it, I have to say, but readers of the Levy
Letter obviously did. And they’re all telling me that it’s absolute rubbish. So
even though a week ago, I was saying I’d quite like to see it, because I’m
quite a big fan of hers, now I’m not so sure I’ll bother. She didn’t sing and
she tried to do comedy. Everybody seems to be moaning about the programme. The
test will be today to see what the figures will be to see if it’s done well or
not. Thanks for the emails about Charlotte Church and her new show. Does anyone
disagree? Did you enjoy the programme?

Slimming

Slimmers have always known it, but now scientists have confirmed it – your body
does not want to lose weight. The latest research shows that we’re programmed
by evolution to keep the weight on in times of famine. Obesity experts have
identified a plateau effect when slimmers lose a few pounds before hitting a
resistance point. From then on, they can’t seem to lose any more weight. The
study, which shows the human body is designed strongly to resist losing weight,
was presented to the International Congress on Obesity at the weekend. So there
you are. If you can’t lose weight, then that’s the reason why. We’re programmed
not to lose weight when you diet. You’ll get to a certain weight and then you
can’t lose any more. Does that make you feel better? I hope so.

Floods

We will, of course, be talking about this on the programme. Two of the highest
tides in twenty-five years are on their way - on Thursday this week, September
7th and again on October 7th. Thousands of homes on the coast and around major
estuaries could be flooded if the natural forces of an exceptionally high tide
coincide with the right weather. Or maybe I should say – the wrong weather! The
MET office’s storm/tide forecast service is on full alert as the highest tides
for twenty-five years arrive. Now if the tides coincide with particularly
strong weather like cyclonic weather patterns, then the result would be
catastrophic. I’ll be asking Paul all about this. As you might have read
yesterday in the Sunday papers, the experts at the Environment Agency are
warning that places particularly under threat include the Thames estuary,
Portsmouth, Cardiff and Hull. So Paul will have the forecast tonight for us as
usual, but as I say, I’ll be asking him about this as well. He’ll be!
giving us all the details about how this will be affecting us in our region.

Driving

If you’re learning to drive at the moment or are about to take your test, then
the very best of luck .One of the best driving lessons ever is from a story
that the press at the weekend got hold of. I thought I would read it to you. A
woman in China crashed her car, while teaching her dog to drive. The woman from
Inner Mongolia decided to give the dog a try at the wheel, while she operated
the accelerator and the brake. Unfortunately, she crashed into an oncoming car.
So just to stress again – a woman was giving her dog driving lessons! Can you
believe this?

Money

Men need to earn about fifty thousand pounds a year, before women consider them
wealthy and successful, a survey has found. One in ten women have even higher
expectations looking for a salary of more than one hundred thousand pounds
before they are really impressed. Men are a little less demanding. They regard
women, who earn forty-two thousand pounds, as wealthy and successful. (They
certainly are!!) 45% of women said that a healthy bank balance was their top
priority when looking for a partner. That’s in contrast to a mere 22% of men,
who said the same about women. Women also expect men to have a large stash of
cash to fall back on with expectations of around £24,000 in savings. Men bank
on their partners building up only about £15,000 for a rainy day. How important
is money to you if you’re looking for a partner? Do they need to earn as much
as that or even more than that? How much do they need to have as savings for
you to be impressed? Let me know.

Well, that's it from me for today. Don’t forget, if you’ve got any photographs
then let me take a look. Did you take any at the weekend? If you did, then
they’re probably of a rainy view, but let me have a look anyway. We might be
able to use them on our Big Screen half way through the programme. Send them to
me. And if at any time you have any pictures or video of anything that’s
happened in your local area, then think of Look North first. We’d love to have
a look. Drop me a line and send them to me to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Have a good day and join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm and again for a news
update after the One Show at twenty-five past seven.

Take care,

Peter
