Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at
6.30pm.

On tonight’s programme, we'll have a special report on an anti-truancy
crackdown in East Hull. As Hull has been classed as one of the worst places in
the country for truancy, we’ll be out with the police as they try and clampdown
on youngsters skipping school. More on that later.

Also tonight, find out why residents of one street in North Hykeham are hopping
mad with BT. They’ve had burnt out sockets and scorched carpets in their homes
and that’s all because of a telegraph pole, which has been struck by
lightening. The residents in North Hykeham say they’re not getting any response
out of BT. We’ll be taking up their plea for help tonight on the programme.

Plus, find out why a best loved concert venue in Bridlington could see delays
to its planned opening and we go behind the scenes of a special showcase of the
best of Lincolnshire produce.

And I’m very excited about this. I'll be speaking to Richard Whiteley's
partner, Kathryn Apanowicz, all about the great man. I know you were all huge
fans of Richard and he’s still greatly missed, so I hope you can join me
tonight for this. And of course, as well as all the day’s news, Paul will be
here with the forecast as well. All that on BBC One at half past six.

Books

There are several good books out at the moment. We’re going to be talking about
one of those on the programme tonight with Kathryn Apanowicz. At the moment,
I’m reading the autobiography by Barbara Windsor, which is a great read. It’s
called – All Of Me and it’s a thick paperback and it’s compelling reading.
Somebody else has also got a book out and that’s Leslie Phillips. Leslie, of
course, was in many of the Carry On films. He’s written his autobiography,
which is called – Hello. That’s hardly surprising is it! And that’s out at the
moment, so I’m looking forward to reading that one next. Terry Wogan, as well,
has got his autobiography out. They all seem to come out at this time of the
year. It’s all in time for the Christmas rush I suppose. If there are any books
that you highly recommend, then do let me know and I’ll pass on your
suggestions to readers of the Levy Letter.

Children

Half of children are unable to speak properly when they start primary school,
according to a new study. The death of conversation in the home means that
around three hundred and fifty thousand youngsters a year are unable to string
a sentence together by the age of five and are able only to understand simple
instructions. Some experts blame the lack of time that parents spend talking to
their children. The demise of the family meal is being blamed amongst other
things as well. So there you are. That’s half of children unable to speak
properly when they start primary school. And of course yet again the parents
and the families are being blamed.

Names

The list has just been published for family favourites of girls’ names and
boys’ names over the last year. Jack is number one. Joshua is number two.
Thomas is at three. Harry is four and James is five. The most popular girls’
names over the last year are Jessica at one, Grace at two, Olivia is three,
Emily is four and Ruby is five. Also in the top ten list is Sophie at six,
Chloe at seven, Lucy at eight and then Katie and Ellie. Some of the oddest
names in the list – well, Bronte, as in Charlotte! Clementine, as in orange and
Kofi as in Kofi Annan! Perhaps they know where their names come from, but what
about FDS! Her parents will have some explaining to do! But one baby has been
christened FDS! Cruel or what?

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a picture that you’d like to see up on the Big
Screen, then send it to me. Either send it electronically or in the post to our
usual address of BBC Look North, Queen's Court, Queen's Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH.
Also, if you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we could deal with on
the programme, then give me the details and send them to me. Also send a
contact telephone number as well. The address is as usual, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that's it from me for today. Just a reminder, of course, that if you know
anyone, who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and you think they would like
one, then tell them to go to one of the two addresses at the bottom of the
page. Tell them to click on Levy Letter and sign up! They’ll then get their
first daily email from me from the following day.

Have a good afternoon and join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Take care, bye for now

Peter
