Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me today for all the day’s news
and of course Paul will have the forecast on BBC One at 6.30pm.

On tonight's programme, I'll have the latest on the former Grimsby detective,
who's in court today over child sex abuse claims. And I'll have the latest on
the three managers suspended at the Lincolnshire Hospital's Trust today as the
enquiry into the fiddling of waiting lists begins. I'll be speaking to the
chairman of the Health Trust to find out more.

I'll also be meeting a woman from Lincolnshire, who has turned her life around
and could be in with a chance to win a top business award. It’s an inspiring
story, so I hope you can join me for that one.

I'll be bringing you the first pictures of the new radical designs for beach
huts on our East Coast. And they say that manners cost nothing - well we'll be
looking at claims that being nice is dying out as our pace of life increases.
All that on BBC One at 6.30pm.

what’s on the programme that night and of course any other gossip as well, then
tell them to sign up. Tell them to go to either one of the two addresses at the
bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter and they’ll get their daily free Levy
Letter from me after that.

Spinach

Well, Popeye the sailor used to sing about it, telling us it gave him his super
strength. Well, scientists believe that it may protect people from the most
common cause of blindness and they are preparing to test the theory that it
could boost the chemicals which stop the eye degrading. Experts have worked
this out at Manchester University and they have asked us to eat a diet rich in
spinach, kale, sweetcorn and broccoli. So there you are. Spinach saves your eye
sight as well as giving you the strength of Popeye!

Age

There’s two stories about age in the papers today. Ageism is endemic in the
work place with over sixty million people in this country having been the
victim or aware of it happening. A report just out reveals widespread
discrimination on age. The research by the think tank – Employers Forum on Age
– comes ahead of the biggest change in employment laws since the 1970s. New
regulations coming into force on the 1st October will outlaw age discrimination
at work. Half of those questioned in this research were unaware of the changes.
From the poll of workers aged sixteen and older, more than six in ten of them
said that they knew of ageism around them. Four in ten had seen the manager
treat employees differently because of their age. So there you are. Ageism in
the office is rifer than ever.

Talking of age, turning forty used to be something a woman dreaded, but if the
results of another survey is to be believed, then it is now a milestone to look
forward to. According to the poll, today’s over-forties look younger and have
greater earning power than ever before. They’re also more confident than they
were in their twenties. And given the choice, over half of the seven thousand
women questioned said that they would not like to go back to their younger
days. So there you are. Good news for those of us coming up or just over forty!

Michelle

As you know, Michelle Dewberry, who won the television show The Apprentice
earlier in the year, has hardly been out of the papers since she started her
job with Sir Alan Sugar. There was the story of course of sadly losing her baby
and then splitting up with her lover, Syed Ahmed. Well, the couple have been
spotted together, so perhaps the relationship might be back on. But according
to some of the stories in the papers yesterday and today, it seems that she is
no longer working for Sir Alan Sugar, saying that things have not worked out. A
spokesman for Miss Dewberry said however that “Michelle is still working for
the company at the moment. She has not been fired and she has not quit. As far
as I know, she has no plans to leave the company.” But another of the stories
says that she has already left. So there you are. What are we to believe? We’ll
follow the story of course with interest. And one day it would be nice, if
Michelle returns home to Hull, to get her on the sofa !
for a chat. If we can arrange that, then that would be rather good. Anyway, we
send our best wishes to Michelle.

Hull

A parcel arrived in the post today. It’s a hard backed book and it’s just about
to be published at £14.99 by Ian Carstairs. It’s called A Portrait of Hull. I
always buy books on Hull if I can, but this one is just fabulous. It’s chiefly
photographs of Hull today and some older ones as well. It’s a fabulous book. If
you like photographs, then I’m sure you’ll like this. It’s reasonably priced.
I’m not the agent by the way for the author! But it’s a lovely book and it’s
called A Portrait of Hull. Look out for it. And there’s a great picture of The
Deep on the cover. That seems to be the picture that everyone seems to use when
they talk about Hull these days. But still, it’s a very good book.

Well, that's it from me for today. Join me this evening on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Bye for now.
