Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm
as usual.

As well as all the day’s news, on tonight's programme we’ll be continuing to
look at the illegal and uninsured mini motorbikes in our region. Many people
have emailed me in to tell me how they think they are dangerous when driven
around estates and villages and how noisy they are too. We’ve been reporting on
Humberside Police’s crackdown on these bikes where many of these motorbikes
have been confiscated and crushed. Well, we'll be looking at a new way to deal
with them in Hull, which has just been announced. I’ll have the full story for
you tonight.

And you may not be aware, but we have one of the best examples of a Victorian
kitchen garden in our region at Normanby Hall. The wonderful park is just
outside of Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire and there are some lovely gardens
and deer park and I think they have open air concerts there every so often.
Well worth a look if you’re in the region. Gardener's World will be filming
there today and Look North will be joining them to find out why this garden is
so special.

I'll have the latest in our Coast series in Mablethorpe looking at how the
coast and the sea have changed the lives for many people in our region. And
we'll be live at Sleaford train station tonight at the launch of a new music
train. Sounds very bizarre doesn’t it? Find out more tonight about that!

Plus we all know we should recycle more. We’ve heard a lot recently about
councils changing the way they collect our rubbish with different bins for
different types of rubbish. I’m sure we’re all finding it quite difficult to
sort out our rubbish. So tonight on the programme, I'll be finding out how new
technology, being produced in Lincoln, could make it all so much easier! More
on that later and of course Paul will be here with the detailed weather
forecast.

Emails

Thanks for all the emails on a variety of subjects. There’s one here from
Daphne making reference to something I was talking about before I went away.
She says, “You were talking about the people in Bristol, who couldn’t have
doormats. Well, over the weekend, I heard on the radio that the council have
had a change of heart and people can have their mats back after all. Power to
the people!” So that was the story about the council taking doormats away,
because they are a trip hazard!

Holidaymakers

I see from a report out today that holidaymakers from Yorkshire and
Lincolnshire are getting more adventurous, according to a new survey, which
found that one in ten wanted adventure and action rather than relaxation in
their holiday. Women are more adventurous than men and the most adventurous
travellers come from the East Coast. And also, one in six holidaymakers from
Yorkshire and Lincolnshire take a naturist holiday! There you are. That’s from
a survey just out today!

Career VS Money

Young British women are more independent than ever before according to some
figures just out. And most women prefer a successful career than finding a
wealthy husband. Instead of inspiring to be a footballer’s wife, like Colleen
McLoughlin and living the lifestyle of a WAG, women would rather be like J K
Rowling or BBC news presenter, Fiona Bruce and own their fortune. Around 88% of
those questioned said that they put their career ahead of finding a rich
partner. So the days of finding a rich man allegedly are over!

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a picture that you think we could show on the
programme, then email it to me. And if you’ve got a problem or a story that you
think we could do on the programme, then drop me a line. It’s the usual address
of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Debt

You might have heard this story on the news just yesterday, but it is
fascinating. The average person in this country has got £3000 worth of debt.
Well, for many youngsters, especially ex-graduates, that will seem like
nothing. Many of them have £16,000 or £18,000 worth of debt, but debt has
become a way of life for young people, with record numbers being plunged into
insolvency, according to these figures. Now the number of under-thirties
declaring themselves insolvent has nearly doubled between March and August
compared with the same time last year. That’s frightening isn’t it? The study
shows that around a hundred and ten thousand young people owe more than £5000
on their credit cards and around 2.4 million eighteen to twenty-four year olds
have unsecured debts of up to £3000. If you want to comment on that then get in
touch.

Now as somebody, who enjoyed the seventies more than any other decade, then
it’s great to read that many of the leading shopping and grocery brands from
the 1970s are staging a revival. The type of thing that I’m talking about is
Blue Nun wine and those matches. Do you remember those matches where we used to
use the bottle and you could buy a bulb holder that had some plastic on the
bottom and you could stick it into an old wine bottle and you could make a
table lamp out of it? Do you remember that? Cinzano is back in fashion. Smash –
do you remember the Smash men back on the telly? And Spam! This is according to
the trade magazine, The Grocer. High street industry experts have spotted a gap
in the market for old favourites. Many of these items are back on the shelves!
Alongside watching programmes like Starsky and Hutch, The Dukes of Hazzard and
Shaft, The Bee Gees and 10CC were playing on the radio. So there you are. Watch
out for the old seventies brands back on the shelv!
es, like Cinzano advertised by Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter.

Well, that's it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Take care,

Peter
