Hello it’s Peter here, welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter, hope your day’s going
well and you can join me to Look North tonight on BBC One at half past six.

The Humberside Police officers who shot dead a 26 year old man have discovered
today that they will not face prosecution. We’ll be hearing from the dead man’s
family.

Also tonight we report on new police powers to seize cars without tax or MOTs
immediately, leaving drivers to walk home if they get caught while out and
about. And what's going to happen on Friday when Hull FC's big game against
Bradford Bulls clashes with the first night of Hull Fair? Hull Fair is of
course one of the biggest events in this area’s calendar so that’ll be
interesting.

Also on the programme we'll be talking to a Hull City coach who’s just back
from Africa where he's been coaching children with a little help from Fatboy
Slim.

And today the BBC is giving the public a chance to try their hand at reading
the news. Our Open Centre’s been transformed into a mini studio where people
are meeting the presenters, including me, and getting to learn more about what
we do.
Of course we’ll also have a detailed weather forecast from Paul, that’s all
tonight on BBC One at the usual time.

Blunt Farewell

Singer songwriter James Blunt’s number one hit “Goodbye my lover” has topped
the charts again, but this time as the most popular song to be played at
funerals! A survey carried out by the Bereavement Register has found that many
people in the UK are rejecting traditional sombre music when they say goodbye
to their loved ones.
This of course started after Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” and several
other songs were played at the funeral of Diana Princess of Wales. Well some of
the top ten songs are “Goodbye my Lover”, then “Angels” by Robbie Williams at
number two, very popular at funerals. Then “I’ve had the time of my Life” by
Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley at three. “Wings beneath my Wings” is number
four. That song goes on and on, whenever you go into the clubs it’s always
playing. “Candle in the Wind” is number six. Then also sitting in the top ten
is “Every Breath You take” which is a bit odd. And also “Tears in Heaven” by
Eric Clapton.

If you’ve got thoughts on that one, or indeed anything else then do get in
touch with us as always at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Daniel O’ Donnell Competition

Congratulations to Sue Walford from Anlaby High Road…. Winner of the Daniel
O'Donnell CD. It’ll be winging it’s way out to you in the very near future. I’m
sure you’ll enjoy it very much.

Weddings

>From man’s best friend to man’s best man – dogs are being entrusted with a
>ceremonial role in their owner’s weddings with some pampered dogs getting
>their own outfits to match the bride and groom. The dogs perform their duties
>in tuxedoes and bow ties, silk dresses with costume jewellery. Church of
>England priests have been given the power to include dogs in the wedding
>service. The Church of England has said, that “while it would be inappropriate
>for a dog to replace the father of the bride, there would be no sensible
>grounds for objecting to the dog taking the role of the ring-bearer.” So there
>you are. Can you believe that? You can get a little doggy outfit for your pet
>as well. A dog tuxedo costs £19.99, which includes a white shirt and a black
>overcoat. For female dogs, there is a silk and lace bridesmaid dress, costing
>£99! So there you are. If you want your dog to go to the wedding, then that’s
>what it will cost you! Can you believe that?

Food

Our top ten favourite smells – fish and chips is the best smell in this country
according to a list just out. That’s our top smell. At number two is fresh
coffee. At three are flowers. Freshly cut grass is at four. Although, I suppose
that wouldn’t be a favourite for people suffering from hayfever. Babies,
interestingly enough, is at five. Fresh air after rainfall is at six. Clean
sheets on the bed at seven. That’s always quite nice isn’t it? Roast dinner is
at eight. Fresh baked bread is number nine and sizzling bacon is number ten.
There is a list as well of our least favourite smells, but I don’t think we
really want that sort of thing in the Levy Letter, because some of them are
quite revolting. I’m sure you can imagine what they would be! But the top smell
in this country is fish and chips! I’m sure many of you will agree with that!

Pay as you drive

Motorists will be soon be able to buy pay-as-you-drive insurance for the first
time. Aircraft style black boxes will log details of all journeys meaning lower
bills for those who drive less often or in daylight only – it seems like common
sense doesn’t it?
One of the biggest insurance companies in the country hopes to have a hundred
thousand of these black boxes fitted in cars by the end of this year. Basically
drivers will pay more during the hours of 11pm to 6am, when they are at greater
risk of being killed or in a serious accident. It’s interesting that when there
are least people on the road, you’re at the greatest risk of being killed!
Well, civil liberties groups are concerned that the boxes may be used to
collect incriminating data against drivers, such as breaches of the speed
limit. The “Spy in the boot” as it’s been called is smaller than a video
cassette and it is in constant contact with the satellite that monitors the
vehicle’s position. But for some people it could mean cheaper insurance.

Well that’s all from me today, have a very good day and join me if you can on
BBC One tonight at half past six. Don’t forget, if you know someone who doesn’t
get their daily free Levy Letter then point them in the direction of one of the
two addresses at the bottom of the page. Get them to go there any time they
like, sign up, then they’ll get their Levy Letter from me, starting tomorrow,
or as soon as they sign up. Well have a very good day, and watch out for Look
North at half past six tonight as always.

Bye for now

Peter
