Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I have no idea
when you’ll get this letter. We have some problems, as you might have noticed,
just at the moment. It’s all to do, apparently, with the BBC computer server in
London, which means that the letters have got held up and in one case,
Thursday’s Levy Letter arrived at two thirty on Sunday afternoon! So please
accept my apologies. It’s not my fault. I am pressing the right buttons! It’s
just a computer server in London and I’m told that it might take a little while
to get sorted, but I’m sure it will eventually.

I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm for tonight’s
Look North as usual. At least that’s not delayed! On the programme tonight,
we'll be looking at the performance of our police force as, yet again,
Humberside Police have been named as the worst performing force in the country.
I'll be trying to get some answers from the Chief Constable on these new
figures. And we'll be finding out what it means for Lincolnshire Police and how
they could better improve their service for the residents of Lincolnshire. I’ll
have the full story on that tonight.

They seem to divide opinion, whenever I talk about them on the programme, but
how do you fancy never having another electricity bill? We'll be meeting the
families putting up their own wind turbines in their own gardens and on the
houses. I’ve mentioned it in the Levy Letter before about the new turbines you
can buy from a well known DIY store that you can attach to your house. The law
will be changing shortly so that you don’t even need planning permission for
these turbines. We’ll be talking to the families in Lincolnshire about why
they’re keen to generate their own electricity.

Also tonight, we'll be meeting a man from Hull, who's making his living as a
professional ten pin bowler. And we'll be in the Oxfam shop in Lincoln where
BBC's Cash in the Attic antiques expert, Jonty Hearnden, is there valuing the
donated goods! Perhaps there are a few bargains there! We’ll be finding out.
I’ll also be talking to the acclaimed writer, Ian Rankin. He’s coming to
Lincoln today to talk about his new book. Tune in tonight to find out how you
could win a copy of this! That’s tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. I hope you can
join me then. And also Paul will have the forecast.

Peace and Quiet

We all like a bit of peace and quiet when we go to the countryside, but now
they’ve made a list of the top ten most tranquil places and the top ten of the
least tranquil places in the UK. And we do really well on this one! The sixth
most tranquil place in the UK is Lincolnshire and the seventh is the East
Riding of Yorkshire. That’s only beaten by Northumberland, Cumbria, North
Yorkshire, Durham and Devon. It’s quite surprising that Durham is in there and
Cornwall isn’t there at all. Not that I’m biased of course! But Lincolnshire
and East Riding are at number six and seven. The worst places for tranquillity
are Slough, Greater London, Luton, West Midlands, Blackpool, Portsmouth,
Southampton, Derby, Reading and Bournemouth. There’s no great surprises there.
Tranquillity, apparently, is one of the greatest benefits that we can all get.
So there you are. That’s a new list that’s just published from the Campaign to
Protect Rural England. They asked more than thirteen hundred pe!
ople to define what tranquillity is. The top answers were a natural landscape,
bird song, peace and quiet, natural looking woodland and seeing the stars.
Lincolnshire and the East Riding did extremely well on that one.

Orange

Well, the future is orange and the future is up 30p a litre! A world shortage
of juicy oranges could force up the price in shops by 30p a litre according to
growers. Frost and floods in many growing areas and hurricanes in Florida have
produced one of the worst crops on record. The price warning came from the
Serious Food Company, which makes around half of the freshly squeezed orange
juice on sale in the UK supermarket shelves. So be warned! Orange juice is on
the way up.

Speaking Clock

If you saw Look North last night, then you’ll know about this hunt for the new
speaking clock to be replaced after twenty one years by a member of the public.
A national wide competition is being launched to find the new announcer.
Contestants will submit a telephone recording of their voices and all the
proceeds will go to Children In Need. The winner will be announced on Children
In Need night on the 17th November. If you want to take part then there is a
special telephone number to call that we gave out on Look North last night. And
it is 09067 533 533. So have fun doing that and all the best of luck. It could
be you! It would be great if it was someone from our part of the world. There
is every chance, apparently, that this time the speaking clock could have a
regional accent. So the very best of luck.

And talking of Children In Need, there are only a few tickets left for the
Evening With Peter Levy with our star guests and Paul as well. If you want to
be there, then book soon. Go to the Hull Truck box office in person or give
them a call on 01482 323638.

Walnuts

Sales of walnuts have rocketed after research, two weeks ago, indicated that
they could keep heart disease at bay. One supermarket has seen sales of organic
walnut kernels surge by 80% in two weeks. Sales of pre-packed organic walnuts
in shells have risen by 72%. Two weeks ago, it was reported that scientists
found that eating a handful of nuts a day could keep heart disease at bay by
preventing fatty foods from damaging the arteries. Since then everybody has
been eating walnuts. If you have, then you can eat them guilt free for once, so
enjoy!

Well, that's it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. Don’t
forget, if you’ve got a problem or an issue or a story that you think we should
know about, then drop me a line and give me the details. The address, as usual
if you want to get in touch with me, is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or if it’s urgent,
then give me a call on 01482 323232!

Take care, see you tonight,

Peter
