Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter…..
On the programme tonight...

As the government threatens to withdraw subsidies for post offices, we take a
look at the effects of closures. Now this is an issue that’s bound to affect a
lot of you, we’ve all used our local post office, and I expect a big response
on this.

And you may remember Boston being controversially named as the nation's fat
capital, well on the programme tonight we’ll meet one man who's fought back to
lose ten stones! That’s an amazing achievement, and hopefully he’ll be an
inspiration to others.

And we'll also be meeting the 16 year old girl from Spalding who's taking on
the world at Taekwondo.

I'll also speak to the retired Policeman turned magician, who can make your
lottery tickets into cash. He’s been named magician of the year apparently, and
I’m looking forward to seeing him do a few tricks. I do enjoy a bit of magic!
That’s all on the programme tonight at half past six, and of course Paul will
also be there with his forecast.

Pumpkins

Thanks to everyone earlier in the year who sent in for Peter’s Pumpkin seeds,
and for all the pictures I’ve been sent in over the last few months. Well today
I’ll be judging them, and picking out the best pumpkins so if you want to see
that then come down to the BBC Open Centre in Hull today at half past three
this afternoon.

Best places to live

You might have heard me mention this last night on the TV, but if you live in
Hull, they’ve produced a little list – well quite a big list actually – of the
best and worst areas to live, ranked by six quality of life categories, to give
an overall rating. They took in things like housing, economics, education,
crime, health etc. And Kingswood comes out as the best part of Hull to live in.
Newland Park is second, Sutton third, and Howarth Park is forth, and Inglemire
is number five.
Drypool and Victoria Dock come in at fourteenth. The bottom of the list is
Orchard Park, coming in at number thirty eight. As I said, the Hull awards were
ranked by quality of life. If you have a view on that, or indeed anything then
you can get in touch with me at the usual address [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And don’t forget, if you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we might
be able to help with then do get in touch and let me know. Just give me the
details and let me have your telephone number as well.

Speech

If you want to talk like they do on the BBC News, if you want to talk as
correctly as a BBC announcer, then a new book will show you how. Yesterday, the
Corporation published a guide to pronunciation. It’s an up to date version of
something that’s been used since the days of Alexandra Palace. The Oxford Guide
to BBC Pronunciation contains phonetic spellings of more than sixteen thousand
ambiguous words and phrases and difficult sounding names, any of which could
catch out an unwary newsreader – of which there are plenty! Everything from how
to pronounce Al Qaeda, which is pronounced UHL-KAHIDUH, to many others which
are difficult. What use this book will be to anybody apart from a BBC
newsreader I’m not quite sure, but it’s out just now.

Northern Theatre Company

I gather it’s been a phenomenal week for the Northern Theatre Company with
their production of Thoroughly Modern Millie which Liam Mower has been in at
the New Theatre. If you’ve been then I hope you enjoyed it, and of course
there’s a couple more nights, tonight and tomorrow.
And by the way, starting next week at the Hull New Theatre is a production of
Annie, with Ruth Madoc from Hi Dee Hi, and also Little Britain. Also, the young
lady who plays Annie is from our part of the world. We’ll be talking to her
next Tuesday on the programme. We’ll be talking to Ruth Madoc as well.

Nice Guys

Well it’s often believed that that roguish, naughty, handsome and suave cads
have no shortage of admirers, but when it comes to getting the girl for good –
according to a new survey just out – nothing beats the genuine nice guy. He’s
often dismissed as too wimpish or dull, but such men are actually more
attractive to women than their macho rivals. A psychologist has set up a series
of experiments, which show that people who are nice are genuinely the ones who
get the girls than those who have more to offer.

And on the subject of sex, they may be known as the fairer sex, but try telling
that to their partners first thing in the morning. A study has shown that women
are much grumpier than men over breakfast, and remain in a foul mood all
morning. The Sleep Council survey shows that only one in seven women escape
waking peevish opposed to a quarter of men. In other words, women are grumpier
in the morning. Thirteen admitted that they cannot shake their bad mood for
around four hours as opposed to ten percent of men. And it seems it’s all down
to broken sleep, and the men are responsible because they do a lot of snoring
during the night, preventing the women from getting a good night’s sleep.

Also, twenty eight percent of women as opposed to just five percent of men do
household chores and housekeeping just before setting off to work. It tends to
be them who prepare breakfast, spend time with the children, check their
emails, and attend their beauty regime. Women far outweigh men when it comes to
having a busy and packed morning. And that’s why it’s official that women are
more grumpy than men in the mornings!

Well that’s it from me today. Thank you very much for reading, have a very good
weekend, whatever you’re up to. If you meet anybody who’s not signed up to the
Levy Letter then point them in the direction of one of the two addresses at the
bottom of the letter, get them to sign up and they’ll get their first Levy
Letter on Monday. Have a good weekend, join me tonight at six thirty on BBC
One, and bye for now.

Peter
