Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope you’ll be
able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six. It’ll be the last Look
North of the week.

On the programme tonight, we'll be investigating a court case concerning the
extraordinary story of a woman and a baby, who fell from the Humber Bridge and
survived. Plus it's D-day for Bridlington hospital as we find out the results
of a review of hospital services in the East Riding. We’ll be finding out what
it means for patients in the area.

We'll also have the latest on the fraud case involving Boston United manager,
Steve Evans. We'll be live at the ground tonight to get the fans' reaction to
this. Plus we'll meet the Wragby teenagers, who are going back five hundred
years, to use medieval tools in a new project.

I'll be talking to the Welsh superstar, Katherine Jenkins, as she hits the road
for her new tour. She’s coming to the region and she’s got such a wonderful
voice, so I’m sure many people will be excited to see her in concert. And
there’s more news in the world of entertainment! Make sure you tune in tonight
to find out how you could win tickets to see the fantastic hit West End show,
Chicago, when it comes to Grimsby. We’re getting some great theatre productions
coming to the area, so that’s one to look out for.

And we’ll be getting a forecast, accurate or otherwise, from Paul tonight!

Weekend

The weekend is nearly here. If you’re out and about this weekend, then I hope
it goes well. If you’re just having an easy one and a quiet one, then enjoy!
And just a reminder that we’ve got another busy week coming up next week on the
programme. We’re also looking for some Leave it to Levys. If you’ve got a
problem or an issue that you think we could deal with on the programme, then
give me the details. Drop me a line over the weekend and email me direct to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] And also, of course, if you’re chatting to anyone over the
weekend, who’s not signed up for the Levy Letter and you think they would like
one, then all you’ve got to do is tell them to go to either one of the two
addresses at the bottom of the page. And get them to sign up. If they do, then
they’ll get their first letter from me on Monday.

Getting Fatter

Failing to fight the flab, feeling fat – does your spare tyre slow you down?
Well, you may not be to blame! You could just be a victim of modern life. New
studies show that a range of factors make you fat, including stopping smoking,
air conditioning and lack of sleep and the fact that fatter people have fat
children. Now the research comes as the West is in the grip of an obesity
epidemic. In Britain, one in four adults are obese. As you know, we’re way
above the national average in Hull. The reasons why we pile on the pounds and
there are some interesting ones as well - lack of sleep, a study showed that
after they had tracked women for sixteen years they found that those, who slept
five hours a night, gained more weight than those, who slept six hours. So lack
of sleep is one reason why we pile on the pounds. Central heating and air
conditioning may be making us fat. When we’re in a comfortable temperature we
use less energy, because we sweat or shiver less. Giving up smo!
king helps us increase our weight. We’re not surprised about that are we? Your
body weight may be shaped in the womb of your grandmother. Children of obese
mothers are much more likely to become obese later in life and laboratory
research shows that obesity can cascade down the generations. In other words,
if mum’s fat, then it’s likely to follow with your children and grandchildren.
Modern medicines can make you fat, pollution can increase weight, older mothers
are more likely to have children, who grow up to be obese. It’s all a bit
depressing for a Friday isn’t it? But that’s all from new research just out.

Make Up

You might think that more make up is worn abroad in places like Paris or Milan,
but no! We’re spending more on make up here than anywhere in Europe. A billion
pounds a year on make up. Applying foundation, blusher and lipstick is part of
the morning routine for millions of women, who are happy to pay the price for
looking good. The market has soared by almost 40% since 2001. That’s incredible
isn’t it? British women are now spending £36.00 a year on make up. That’s £4.00
more than their nearest rivals, who are the French. Actually, when you say it
like that, then £36.00 a year isn’t very much. But that’s what is spent and
it’s soared by 40% since 2001. What’s changed, I’m not sure.

Schhh…. You Know Who

People of a certain age will remember the Schweppes adverts with the catch line
– schh…you know who. They were presented by an actor in this country, who was
extremely familiar in television dramas, such as The Avengers, The Scarlet
Pimpernel and Top Secret, in which he claimed the lead role. He is the actor
William Franklyn. I was sad to read that he has died at the eight of
eighty-one. He continued to work in radio until just a few weeks ago until he
lost a long battle with prostrate cancer. A lot of people will recognise the
face, even if they don’t know the name. He was a very debonair actor and
appeared on screen in ten of the Schweppes adverts between 1965 and 1973. He
was the voice of forty of those. He was in numerous programmes on the TV and he
was also the voice on Radio Four’s The Hitchiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, taking
over from the late Peter Jones. So there you are. That’s William Franklyn dying
at the age of eighty-one.

Well, that's it from me for today. As I say, whatever you’re doing at the
weekend then I hope it goes well. I expect you’ll be going to lots of bonfires
this weekend. I hope you enjoy them and I hope they go well. Drop me a line and
look out for your Levy Letter on Monday. And just a reminder that we’re just a
week away from An Evening With Peter Levy, which is on Sunday 12th November at
Hull Truck theatre. The tickets are £15.00 and the money is going to Children
In Need. If you’re coming a week on Sunday, then I look forward to seeing you
there.

Have a good weekend, take care,

Peter
