Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at
6.30pm. Paul will have the forecast and also I’ll have the rest of the day’s
news including an update on the teenage boy run over by a bus in Howden this
morning. I’ll have the full story on that for you.

Also tonight, do you suffer from headaches? If you do, then I’m sure you’ve
been desperate enough on occasions to try even the most bizarre of remedies.
Well, we'll be meeting the woman, who suffered from headaches so frequently
that she’s turned to a new medical treatment to help. She’s now able to turn
off her headaches with a flick of a switch. I’ll be finding out more about that
one.

Anyone, who wanders around the streets of Hull, will be aware of its notorious
stench! Today Hull's sewers will be getting their first proper clean in a
decade. I'll be finding out if it clears the city of its stink.

Also tonight, we'll be getting a tour of a nuclear bunker in Goole, which could
become someone's home. And we'll be with the orchestra making music with
household appliances. All that tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. I’ve had a lot of emails saying
thumbs up for Des O’Connor as a choice for presenting Countdown. He seems to
have gone down favourably, even though some people are saying that it’s
extraordinary that he’s fit and able in his seventies to do that amount of TV.
Anyway, we’ll look forward to seeing him on our screens in the New Year.

Thanks to several people as well, who have written in with what’s on
information. There’s one here today from Wendy Johns. She said, “I would be
grateful if you could give a mention to the Helpringham Petticoat Club coffee
morning in aid of St Barnabus Hospice on Tuesday 14th November from 10.00am til
12noon at Anvil Cottage, 12 The Green in Helpringham near Sleaford.” They’re
trying to raise money. Last year they had a similar coffee morning and managed
to raise over £500 for the hospice. So the coffee morning is open to all.
Tickets are £2.50 and of course that’s on Tuesday 14th November next week at
Helpringham. Go along and support.

You Couldn’t Make It Up

This is about a headline on the BBC news website, which several people have
sent me and I’ll tell you about it. “Chippy Smells of Chips Complaint” A west
Yorkshire chip shop owner is being investigated after a complaint that his shop
smells of fish and chips. Would you believe this? The owner of the New
Scarborough Fisheries was asked to check the odour and that the extraction
system was working properly after the complaint. A spokesman for the council
said that the authority was obliged to investigate the matter. Mr Mortin, who
owns the chip shop, said he was shocked to get a letter about the investigation
and thought it was a joke! The headline of the story is “Fish And Chip Shop
Smells of Fish And Chips.” What a surprise!

Books

Some great books are out at the moment. It’s always the same in the run up to
Christmas. There are lots of biographies out and there are some good books
amongst them. One that I’ve just been reading the review of, which I now want
to buy at the weekend, is of one man, which I found very funny and brilliantly
talented. That’s Tommy Cooper. Of course, he was a great magician and a
wonderful comedian rolled into one and he died literally on stage. I remember
watching the television the night that happened and that was dreadfully sad.
There is a book out called Tommy Cooper – Always Leave Them Laughing and that’s
a biography by John Fisher, which is just published. I understand that it’s an
extremely good read. If you’re a fan, then that’s well worth a read. At the
moment, I’m reading Nobbut A Lad by Alan Titchmarsh. It’s about his childhood
days in the 1950s and early sixties in Ilkley and I’ll be talking to Alan on
the programme in the not too distant future. Last night we wer!
e talking to Derek Acorah on the programme. Derek is one of the most requested
guests. As some people know I’m not a great fan of mediums and spiritualists,
but Derek is hugely popular.

William Roach

He’s been playing Ken Barlow for the past forty-six years, but now veteran,
William Roach, is to tread the boards with his one-man show. Britain’s longest
serving soap star has been in Corrie since it began in 1960 and will tour the
country in the New Year. Like Des, he is now seventy-four and in the show he
will discuss his life and times in the show, including other things such as his
well-documented support for one of the political parties. He’ll be touring
around and if he comes anywhere near us, then hopefully he’ll come and join us
on the sofa. Well, that won’t be the first time he’s been on the programme.
I’ve lived with Ken Barlow on the screen since being a small boy, so I was
really nervous when he came in to the show and dreaded it in case I called him
Ken! Anyway, I did the interview and it all went very well and I managed to
call him William. And at the end of the interview I said, “William, it’s lovely
to see you, thank you very much indeed for coming in.” The !
music played, the lights went down and that was the end of the programme and I
said, “Ken that was great, thank you very much indeed!” I put my foot well and
truly in it!

I’m A Celebrity

It’s back! The programme is back this weekend. I was led to believe that
Milandra Burrows was going to be in it, but on the lists I’ve seen, she isn’t
there. Jason Donovan is though and so is Jan Leeming. Do you remember her? A
former BBC news reader. Myleene Class from Hear’say and she does a bit of radio
disc jockeying now as well these day. Faith Brown, the comedienne – remember
her? And Matt Willis. I’m not even sure who Matt Willis is. No doubt, somebody
will tell me. Those are just some of those, who are going into the Jungle,
which comes back at the weekend.

Well, that's it from me for today. Thank you very much indeed for reading the
Levy Letter. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm for tonight’s Look North and
look out for your Letter again tomorrow.

Don’t forget, it’s our big Evening With Peter Levy this coming Sunday at the
Hull Truck theatre. I’m not sure if there are any seats left, or any returns,
but a call to the box office at Hull Truck will sort you out on that one.

Join me tonight! Take care,

Peter
