Hello, it's Peter here. Welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day's
going well and you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six.
On tonight's programme we'll speak to the couple who lost thousands of pounds
on an internet scam. They'll tell us how to avoid the same fate. If you’re
about to sell anything over the internet then make sure you watch this tonight.

We're in Gainsborough as the town prepares to ban dogs from several of its
playing fields. We had a similar story not long ago and it proved very
controversial, so we’ll be waiting for your views and comments as usual. We’ll
be giving out the contact details on the programme.

After the recent spate of job losses in our region which has been in the news
so much, we'll be in Grimsby to find out how hard it is to get work.

We'll meet the Lincolnshire teen hailed as the next big thing in the world of
Ballet.

And we've got a sneek peek of what 12 million pounds bought the regenerated
Bridlington Spa. Of course Paul will have the forecast as usual, so don’t miss
it tonight, at the usual time of six thirty on BBC One.

Don’t forget if you’d like to email in and reach me if you’ve got a message for
me or a problem that you’d like us to tackle then the address is the same as
usual. Also, if you’ve got a picture as well to show on the programme then the
address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Television

Watching TV poses a much greater risk to children’s health than was previously
thought, according to a new report. Analysis of 35 scientific studies has
identified 15 bad effects TV can have on youngsters, from short sightedness and
obesity to premature puberty and autism. The report’s author and psychologist
Dr Aric Sigman says that the youngest children should be banned from watching
TV and it should be introduced only judiciously after that. After that the
average British child will have spent the equivalent of a year watching TV by
the time he or she has reached the age of six. That’s amazing isn’t it?
Well, what will parents do without the TV and the video to sit the youngsters
down in front of? Views on that will be gratefully received. Thanks for the
emails as well, absolutely nothing to do with our part of the world, but to do
with Britney Spears, or Britney “Shears”, saying that they don’t understand
what all the fuss is about and if she wants to get her head shaved she can. Not
an awful lot of sympathy but quite a lot of emails on that. Keep them coming in.

Summer Wine

Well one of the greatest days of my life was when I spent a bit of time filming
an episode of Last of the Summer Wine. It was just a 15 second little gag in
one of the episodes 5 or 6 years ago now, falling off a bike, but one of the
great thrills of the job was meeting Frank Thornton and also Peter Sallis.
Peter Sallis has been in the programme since it started. It’s the longest
running situation comedy, or comedy, on television ever. It’s been going for
years and years and still pulls in enormous audiences. Peter Sallis is an
extraordinary man as well, he’s played Norman Clegg for years, and of course
millions more know him as the famous voice of the cheese mad inventor in Nick
Park’s wonderful Wallace and Gromit. Well he’s not in the best of health at the
moment, it has to be said, but nothing is going to get in the way of him
touring around the country coming to small theatres with his small show An
Audience with Peter Sallis. Pocklington Art Centre is deeply honoured, a!
s Peter Sallis will be there on Friday night. It starts at 7.30.

Bankrupt

Well the city has the second highest number of bankrupts in the UK according to
new figures. That’s Hull. Hull was also placed number 6 in the top 10 financial
stress list which is a measure used to define an individual’s potential to
become overstretched and struggle with payments. Well not very good news for
Hull there.
The south-west of England was shown as the country’s bankruptcy black spot with
Torquay topping the list, we were only second behind them. The news comes after
the number of people unable to repay their debts has hit a record high. More
than a hundred thousand people went bust.

Surgery

One in two women, including some as young as 17 would consider plastic surgery
according to a survey of almost 20,000 people published today. Almost a third,
31% of women, who are a size 12 think that they are overweight or fat according
to a poll for the Radio One Newsbeat programme. Almost half, 43% of all women
questioned, said they had skipped a meal to try and lose weight, while 8% had
made themselves sick. The vast majority of people responding to the survey were
aged between 17 and 35. In contrast, half of men said they were OK with how
they look. Half of women said there was lots they would change about their
body. I don’t suppose that survey has got a lot of shock findings in it, but
the number of people who would consider plastic surgery seems to be shooting up
year on year, and indeed, the number of people who are having treatments to
stave off ageing. That brings us back to botox from last week.

Well that’s it from me today, have a very good afternoon and join me tonight on
BBC One from six thirty. And don’t forget, if there’s anyone you know that’s
not signed up to the Levy Letter and they’d like one, then get them to go to
one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page, and sign up. If they do it
today they’ll get their first letter tomorrow. Join me tonight on BBC One at
half past six, bye for now.

Peter
