Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past
six. I'll have all the day's news and Paul will have the forecast. I’m looking
forward to the weekend, if you’ve got something organised or planned, then I
hope you enjoy it. Paul will have the detailed forecast, so you can plan around
the weather and that’s tonight at half past six.

On tonight's programme, we'll be looking at the debate over free school meals
in Hull and I'll be talking to one head teacher, who says that scrapping these
free meals will damage our children's education. More on that tonight. And
watch tonight, to find out why one family is asking the Humber Bridge board to
tackle the problem of suicides from the Bridge. I’ll have the full story on
that tonight.

We'll be talking to the Grimsby campaigner, who says that an invasion of ivy is
damaging our countryside. We'll be meeting the Lincolnshire mum, who converted
to Islam and is taking part in a new BBC series about spirituality. Plus Peter
Sallis will be chatting to me about his time in the wonderful sitcom, Last of
the Summer Wine and why he's coming to Pocklington. And do you fancy a career
change? Well, tune in tonight to find out how you can train to be a blacksmith.
So a busy programme tonight to finish off the week. I hope you can join me
then.

Leave It

As you know, in Leave it to Levy, we deal with your problems on the programme.
Last night, we were trying to tackle the thorny subject of a cemetery gate,
which has been kept closed in Sleaford. It might affect a few, you might
suppose. But it seems that it affects many. Sixteen hundred people have signed
a petition. We were trying last night to help resolve that. But it seems we may
have failed, but we’ll follow that story. If you’ve got a problem that you
think we could tackle on the programme and hopefully we’d have more luck with
that, then let me know. Perhaps we could use the power of Look North behind
your campaign, then drop me a line and give me the details. Give me a contact
telephone number as well, so that we can get back to you. For anything at all,
then the email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Marriage

It seems that fewer and fewer people in England and Wales are getting married.
That’s less than ever before. Some experts believe that some young people have
been put off marriage after seeing their parents divorce. Others believe that
changes in law, to clamp down on sham marriages, explain part of the fall. But
there were 244,000 marriages in 2005, compared with 273,000 in 2004. So at that
rate, there will be an awful lot of single people in a few years time. Fewer
people are getting married. I wonder why we’ve fallen out of love with getting
married and having the big wedding. There’s certainly been plenty of coverage
in the press on that one. Your views on that, then get in touch.

Bicycle

There’s a chap called Oscar Hopkins. He paid £15.00 for a second hand racing
bike. And he thought that because it was quite cheap and a little bit old, that
it would probably wear out within just a few years. Yet more than five decades
and one hundred thousand miles later, the British built racing bike is still
going strong. Oscar bought the £15.00 bike back in 1956 and yesterday he
reported that it’s still on the go, despite being taken to the Alps, the
Pyrenees and through Norway and former Yugoslavia. Each mile he has pedalled on
the steel ten speed bike has been meticulously logged since his first day in
the saddle. He lives in Birmingham. He says, “I have no idea how old the bike
was when I first bought it. I didn’t think to ask.” But the bike, that’s at
least fifty years old, is still going strong. Can you top that story? Unless
you know different – as Cyril Fletcher used to say on That’s Life, then do get
in touch.

Sleep

This is a subject close to my heart being somebody, who doesn’t sleep
particularly well. Sleeping on a problem can, apparently, really solve it,
according to scientists. During a nap, the brain sorts out the day’s memories
into files ready to be accessed at will. And according to the Sleep Research
Centre, sleep serves the function of a tidying process and it will sort out the
mind. So if you have a problem, then sleep on it and the chances are you’ll
have a clearer idea how to sort it out the following day. In a way, that’s
normally true isn’t it? It’s always worse when you think about it the night
before, than it is in the morning. ‘Sleep on it’ – it’s funny how those old
sayings are often true aren’t they?

4x4

Owners of 4x4s (I say nothing) are likely to bear the brunt of changes in the
way car insurance is calculated. Drivers of the big 4x4s, we know the brand
names, the so-called Chelsea Tractors, will have to pay hundreds of pounds more
for comprehensive insurance under a new risk assessment scheme that was
announced yesterday. Changes are also likely to hit drivers of sporty diesels
and some mid range hatchbacks. But be prepared for an insurance clobber if you
are a driver of a Chelsea Tractor!

Weekend

If at the weekend, you meet anyone, who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and
of course do ask them if they would like one, then point them in the direction
of either one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page. So that’s either
bbc.co.uk/humber or bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire. Get them to sign up and they’ll
then get their daily Levy Letter from me. If they do it over the weekend, then
they’ll get their first email from me starting on Monday.

Charlotte

She’s the one celebrity that prompted quite a few emails a few months back when
we were talking about her. She then started her chat show and it was absolutely
panned. Everybody, including me, said it was awful and lo and behold the
audience loved it and it has now been commission for two or more series. We
wish Charlotte Church all the very best. It’s her 21st birthday, so happy
birthday to Charlotte!

Well, that's it from me for today. Thank you very much indeed for reading. Have
a good day and a good weekend.

Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm and take care,

Peter
