Hello, it's Peter here. Welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day's
going well and you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six.
We'll have all the day's news including a report on the public consultation
beginning today into plans to grow genetically modified potatoes in East
Yorkshire. We’ll be speaking to the company responsible, and also those
fighting the proposals.

With two petitions on the Downing Street website about the future of the Humber
Bridge, we’ll have a special report on the campaign to see debts written off
and tolls reduced.

Today is the first public event in Hull to mark the 200th anniversary of the
abolition of the slave trade. We’ll be there to take a look at how the
Wilberforce celebrations are kicking off.

It sounds like a dream job, but we’ll be speaking to the couple who have taken
on looking after Gunby Hall, and asking them if it’s that simple.

Do you remember the bread strike of the 1970s? Well the events are being
remembered in a play at the Hull Truck Theatre. We’ll take a look at it later
on the programme.

And of course the detailed forecast from Paul. That’s all on Look North tonight
at half past six.

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. It’s never been as busy as it
is at the moment, so thanks for all of those. If you want to comment on
something that you’ve seen on the programme or you’ve read on the letter then
do drop me a line. I mentioned Gillian McKeith yesterday, and I had this email
in from Christine…

“I watch Gillian with great interest, I think she’s absolutely
fabulous. I only wish I could lose weight. I’ve tried for a long time but no
good. The only problem is that a lot of the food that she advises one to eat, I
could not stomach. I do like veg and fruit, but garlic makes me ill, just the
smell of it makes me sick. I only like normal veg, have you managed to eat any
of her recipes?”

The answer there is no. Nor have I managed to look for or find quinwa, or
whatever it’s called. So thanks for the emails, keep them coming in to the
usual address [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Comic Relief

Don’t forget the BBC Stars in our Eyes evening on Saturday 3rd March, 7.30pm,
it’s at the Hull New Theatre. Tickets are available from the Box Office on
226655 costing £10 & £9 with all profits going to Red Nose Day this year. It’s
for a good cause, and if you fancy seeing lots of people, including BBC
presenters making fools of themselves – no, not me – then get on the phone and
buy a ticket. It promises to be a lot of fun, and you’ll get to see people
transforming themselves into famous pop stars for your entertainment.

Wine Buffs

Well it seems that Britain is a nation of wine bluffers rather than buffs, and
men are the worst offenders. Nearly a quarter have faked knowledge about a wine
list, but for women it’s just one in ten. Researchers found that nearly half of
those aged between 18-30 admit to knowing very little about wine, yet this age
group are the biggest blaggers with 27% trying to impress pals or dates when
they’re out, saying they know what wine is what. I think we’ve all tried to do
that, or maybe not lie but pretended that it’s ok when we don’t really know,
but it seems that we’re a nation of wine bluffers when it comes to drink.

Bra Sizes

Well for those who are too big for a B but can’t quite fill a C, ladies, this
is good news. From September, one of the major bra makers in this country will
offer bras in half cup sizes such as 32A ½ and 38C ½ and it’s being marketed at
women aged 35 and over who might be seeking more tailored support as time takes
it’s toll. I’m not saying that, I’m reading that from their blurb, but the news
will undoubtedly be welcomed by the thousands of British women who complain
that mainstream lingerie shops fail to recognise the full range of the female
form. Don’t blame me on that one, I’m just reading some of the research that
has been done, but you’ll be able to get half cup sizes from September. Good
news I’m sure for many.

Mums

Well we were talking about a very sad story last night on the programme, and
that’s the number of cases where a baby has died when they sleep in the same
bed or sleep next to mother or father, or maybe not on a bed but on a sofa. It
was a very sad story, and we were trying to get advice and help on that. Of
course there is advice and help, talk to your health visitors if it’s something
that concerns you or maybe your grandchildren.

Women looking to start a family should tuck into more ice cream according to a
surprising new study. Researchers have revealed that eating one serving of high
fat dairy food a week can slash the risk of ovulation failure. The more
helpings a woman had of such things as ice cream and full fat milk, the lower
the chances of ovulation related infertility. A woman who ate ice cream two or
more times a week had a 38% lower risk than one who treated herself less than
once a week. Over all, eating at least one serving of high fat dairy food a
week reduced the risk of not ovulating by 27%, so if you want to get pregnant,
the thing to eat is ice cream. Ice cream offers the most hope to women who want
to be mums, not just ice cream, but anything which is high in fat.

Taxi

We’re planning to do a story on the increasing numbers of cases where people
end up getting into a car, thinking it’s a taxi when it isn’t. It’s hard to
believe, but some are now posing as taxi drivers in a bid to get business.
I’m looking for any examples of this. Does it worry you that you’re getting
into a car which isn’t a proper taxi? Do you ever ask for ID of a taxi driver?
And finally, has this actually happened to you? If so, get in touch with me as
soon as possible at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or by telephone on 01482 326806.

Events

If you’ve got an event coming up that’s for charity and you’d like a little
plug in the Levy Letter then drop me a line, give me the details, and let me
know. Also, if you’ve got a problem or a story which you think we should be
doing on the programme, if it’s a problem for Leave it to Levy, then give me
the details and tell me what it is. Make sure to give me a contact telephone
number as well. Send it to the usual email address at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well that’s it from me today. Join me tonight on BBC One at six thirty, and
look out for your Levy Letter again tomorrow round about the same time.

Take care, bye for now.

Peter
