Hello and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope you’re having a good day,
the sun seems to be shining in Hull and most of our area for now. Of course
we’ve got the weather forecast for the region on the programme today, don’t
miss that.
Also on the programme today, with news of another suspected case of foot and
mouth, we'll be looking at what it could mean for our farmers who've only just
got back to normal after the last outbreak. We may be on the brink of another
major blow to the farmers of this region, don’t miss our findings later on the
programme.

We'll find out how drivers are still ignoring the safety warnings about level
crossings... swerving around the barriers and jumping red lights. We’ll have
more on a new Network Rail campaign urging people to stop taking risks.

It was a great night for Bridlington at the White Rose Tourism Awards. The
resort scooped the top prize at Yorkshire destination of the year. We'll be
finding out what it means for the town.

And we'll have some music from up and coming band The Favours who are tipped
for big things, we featured them as part of the BBC Electric proms... they
start a national tour tonight.
That’s all coming up at the usual time of half past six on BBC One tonight.

Well we had a huge response on our story last night about motorcyclists. There
were a lot of people for and against them after we showed some frightening
footage of speeding and had a debate in the studio. Thank you for all of those
emails, texts, and messages, we may use some of them in the programme tonight
and of course we look at them all.

Speeding

On the subject of speeding, new research from the government’s transport
advisors suggests that reducing our speed while we drive could help save the
planet. Apparently cars are still a major source of pollution, outweighing
airplanes in the amount of dangerous emissions they produce. Well pollution is
something we’re all aware of, but it’s surprising to learn how much our speed
can affect the amount we create.
I think it’s fair to say that a lot of drivers don’t always stick to the speed
limit, but if they did stay below 70 miles an hour they could save 25% more
fuel than cruising along at 80, that’s quite a saving. Driving at 70 miles an
hour compared to 80 also significantly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide
road vehicles emit, perhaps by up to a third.
And this is an interesting statistic, using your air conditioning can use 10%
more fuel while you drive, therefore producing more pollution. That’s rather
frightening isn’t it? So next time you’re pushing the car a little harder to
shave a few minutes off your journey, think of the environment and drop your
speed, it could end up saving you a lot of money as well.

Chocolate

I’ve got a quick tidbit from the news here that’s sure to have hearts sinking,
I’m sorry to pass this on actually, but scientists from Bristol University are
claiming that all the supposed excuses we have for eating chocolate – it’s
addictiveness, and mood enhancing chemicals – are actually myths, and the real
reason we enjoy eating it so much is that we know it’s bad for us!
According to the researchers, the fact that we see it as a naughty indulgence
is what gives the treat its special place in our culture. So there you go, you
can’t blame the chemicals anymore, chocolate gets its zing from the thrill of
treating ourselves with something we know we shouldn’t… Perhaps a little
insight there into human nature!

Well that’s about it from me for today, don’t forget to catch me on Look North
today at half past six on BBC One. If you can’t watch the programme because
you’re getting home late or if you just want to watch some of our main stories
in bite sized pieces then you can find it online at our website
www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. And as always if you have anything you want to
tell me, a story perhaps or a picture for us to use on the programme or if you
want to comment on anything in the Levy Letter, drop me a line at my email
address [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Have a good day, bye for now.

Peter
