Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope you had a
good weekend and you’ll be able to join me tonight on Look North at half past
six as usual. We’ll have all the day’s news and stories as usual, including the
news that from today two schools in our region will be run by a religious
organisation. We'll find out what it means for pupils and we’ll look at why
these so called academies have proved so controversial.

Have you ever been tempted to buy a pirate DVD or CD from a car boot sale?
Well police in our part of the world were cracking down on dealers this
weekend, we went with them and we’ll have a special report tonight.

Also we're taking a look behind the scenes at the company in rural Lincolnshire
that's designing and manufacturing the armoured vehicles protecting our troops
in Iraq and Afghanistan

And our sports reporter Damian Johnson will be live tonight from Hullensians,
the rugby union club that's risen from the ashes. He'll have the clubs story
plus a round up of all the sports news.

And of course we’ll have the weather forecast as always. That’s all coming up
on Look North today at half past six on BBC One.

I’ve got a plug here for a show in Boston, Lincolnshire. Here’s the email from
one of the actors involved from the One Voice group,

“We are an amateur group who are putting on a musical production of “The Little
Shop of Horrors” at the Blackfriars Theatre, Spain Lane, Boston from
Wednesday12th to Saturday15th at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm.
As I am sure you are aware it is a Sci-Fi musical comedy show with one
manslaughter, two murders, and a suicide and that’s just the start!!
We particularly want to encourage the immigrant worker community here in Boston
to participate, and come and view the show. We have one Eastern European lady
member of the cast and all the words for the songs in the show are being
reproduced for the audience in Portuguese, Polish, and Russian. Also all
advertising for the show has a synopsis of the plot in English and the other
three languages.”

Tickets are £6.50 and concessions are £5.50. You can reach the theatre box
office on 01205 363108, and that show sounds like a fun way to spend an
evening, although as anyone who knows the show will say, it might get a little
gruesome!

Cars

I read a story in the news today that’s sure to send a chill down the spine of
any drivers or commuters. Apparently by the year 2031 there will be 6 million
more cars on British roads then there are today, leading to 33.5 million cars
clogging up the nation’s roads. There’s an amazing claim here, it says that
would be enough cars to completely fill a 52 lane motorway from London to
Edinburgh. That’s based on figures released by the Department for Transport.
Just think about that, it’s frightening isn’t it? And you thought traffic was
bad these days…

Reading

I’ll bet that while you’ve been reading this email you haven’t given much
thought to exactly how you’re doing it. Now a new study by scientists from the
University of Southampton has shed some light on our reading mechanisms. It was
previously thought that when we read text, both eyes focussed on a single
letter at a time, but new research claims each eye can look at separate letters
simultaneously as our eyes jump in tiny movements over the page rather than
moving smoothly as we take in information.
According to the researchers, almost 50% of the time, our eyes are looking at
different letters about two characters apart, and out brain fuses these two
images together, giving us the appearance of just one picture. That’s
fascinating, isn’t it? It’s incredible how many things our bodies and brains
are doing that we just don’t realise until somebody analyses it.
The research could be used to find better ways of teaching reading to children,
and helping those with dyslexia, so watch this space – with both eyes if you
can.

Well that’s about it from me for today. As always, if you have a story you want
to let me know about or a picture for the programme you can contact me on
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you have anything for the letter or a plug for an event
for a good cause then you can let me know about that as well. I hope you have a
good day, and join me tonight for Look North on BBC One at half past six as
usual.

Bye for now

Peter
