Hello there and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. On tonight's programme, we'll
be getting the latest as MPs and councillors go to the government today to bid
for compensation for families, who face losing their homes as the East
Yorkshire coast continues to erode away. We’ll be finding out more too about
the future of coastal erosion protection schemes and whether they offer any
hope to families on our East Coast.

Also, we'll be hearing from the taxi driver, who believes he was the victim of
a racially motivated attack in Hull. We’ll be getting his story tonight on the
programme.

We'll be in Sleaford too today, which is at the centre of a carrier bag debate.
Their local town council has taken the lead to reduce the number of plastic
carrier bags that are given out to customers. Could this be welcome news for
green-minded residents in the town?

We'll be meeting the children on their passing out parade today after learning
how to become firefighters in Lincoln. Isn’t that normally every kid’s dream to
become a fireman? Well, we’ll ask them if the job has lived up to the dream!

Could Hull's phone boxes become listed buildings? Hull City Council decides
today whether to protect four of the original kiosks in the city centre. We'll
be looking at the history of this global icon and symbol of the city.

And the theme tunes alone will take you instantly back to the cinema with a big
bag of popcorn on your lap! We'll be paying tribute in our own special way to
Steven Spielberg as film enthusiasts gather today in the city to celebrate the
highest grossing filmmaker of all time. That’s all tonight on BBC One at half
past six.

A couple of plugs first for events in the area! Brenda Shorrock got in touch
with me. She’s the Wardrobe Mistress for the Beverley Musical Theatre Group.
She asked me to plug their Christmas pantomime at the Beverley Memorial Hall
from Tuesday 22nd November to Sunday 2nd December. They’re doing Robinson
Crusoe. So break a leg to them!

And Stephanie Marriott wrote, “Dear Peter, We'd be thrilled if you could either
mention our 'Lights Night' on Look North or in your Levy's Letter (which I
enjoy reading).” So, Stephanie tells me there is an extra special lights
switch-on night on Friday 30th November in Hornsea. Apparently, all the lights
in Hornsea are paid for and put up by volunteers, so well done to all of them.
Best of luck to the people of Hornsea on Friday 30th of November. I hope you
all enjoy it!

A Good Read

I certainly like to curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea and a good book. It’s
definitely a good way to unwind after a long week of work. Well, here’s a story
of the latest gadget to infiltrate the oldest of traditions! Leather-bound or
paperback books may be the thing of the past shortly as a new gadget is being
launched. The ‘Kindle’ is like a mini computer about the size of a paperback
and can download a book wirelessly in under a minute and store about two
hundred novels. And if you wanted to keep up to date with current affairs, then
the ‘Kindle’ can subscribe to daily newspapers. By the looks of it, it’s just
available in America at the moment at a cost of about £195. You can access an
online encyclopaedia and it can also play music. What worries me is that I
don’t like looking at a screen for too long – it sends your eyes funny doesn’t
it? So I’m not sure how this actually works, but they say it uses a
revolutionary technique (don’t they all) to make the screen and w!
ords look like the matte quality of ink on paper. You also don’t scroll down
the page either like you would on a computer, but instead the reader flips the
page backwards or forwards using controls on the side of the device. So at the
moment, this is just being launched in America. We’ll have to wait and see how
it’s received over there before they decide to make a UK version. I think I’m
undecided on that new gadget myself!

Well, that's it from me for today. Lots going on with the programme tonight. I
hope you can join me for that. And as always keep in touch with me about any
news story you think Look North should be covering. It’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] as
usual!

Take care,

Peter
