Hi there and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. Tonight on the programme, the
countdown to closures continue for our local post offices. We'll have a live
debate on the issue.

Plus we'll be looking at how cancer patients at an East Yorkshire hospital are
being given unlimited supplies of ice-cream in a bid to help their recovery.

And find out how migrant children are breathing new life into Lincolnshire'
schools.

Also one year on we talk to the victims, who lost money when the Christmas
savings club Farepak collapsed. We’ll see how they're preparing for this year's
festivities.

And we continue our Autumwatch series. I think daily, when I look out the
window, that it’s getting more and more Autumnal. Tonight we'll be looking at
the late arrival of fungi and what to look out for in your garden. Along with
the weather forecast, we’ll have the rest of the day’s news, all on BBC One at
half past six.

Our Open Centre at our studios in Hull has a plea for you. They want your old
mobile phones and they don’t care what sort of state they’re in. They get £5
for each mobile phone you donate and all the money will go to Children In Need.
So take your old phone to the BBC receptions in Hull and Grimsby or to Lincoln
as well and that’s all for Children In Need.

And talking of which, if you are doing something for Children In Need and its
legal and decent why not do it in the BBC Open Centre in Hull? If you are
shaving your head, sitting in a bath of beans or anything else to raise money
for Pudsey call us on 01482 323232 and come and use the centre to host your
event. So if you want to do your event at our Open Centre in Hull, then give us
a ring on that number.

I’ve also said that if you’re organising an event for Children In Need, then
let me know about it and I’ll put a plug in the Letter for you. Sue Spice has
been in touch over email. She says, “We’re holding a Charity salsa Dance on
Saturday 10th November at Beverley’s Memorial Hall in aid of Children In Need.”
So I’ve been told that there’ll be live music from Quinteto Mambo Jambo and a
portion of the ticket price will be donated to the charity. So if you fancy
doing a bit of salsa this weekend, then head off to Beverley’s Memorial Hall
this weekend.

Lots of plugs in today’s Letter. Here’s another one. The BBC Blast truck will
be in the Church Square in Scunthorpe today, Friday and Saturday offering free
workshops for thirteen to nineteen year olds in all sorts of creative arts,
film making, animation, radio, dj-ing, mc-ing, radio and video journalism. If
you haven’t been along to the truck before, then I really recommend it. It’s
fitted out with state of the art technology and all the team down there will be
working with lots of young people in Scunthorpe to create some exciting
projects. So if you’re in Scunthorpe today, Friday and Saturday, then take a
look at the BBC Blast truck.

Catching A Few Rays

I know for a fact that lots of you hate the constant change of opinion when it
comes to what is good for you and what isn’t good for you. As you know, I like
to keep healthy and I have very good intentions of eating healthily too, so I
get just as frustrated as you do when scientists come up with the latest thing
that’s supposed to be bad for us. Surely, there’s not much left that is really
good for us. Anyway, here’s yet another example. I thought we were all supposed
to stay out of the sun and slap on the sunscreen, but now scientists are saying
a healthy dose of sunshine may be the secret to staying young. Vitamin D is the
key to this, which is naturally produced by the skin when given access to a few
rays of sunshine and can help slow down the ageing process. And I don’t
understand the connection, but Vitamin D can also help protect against
age-related diseases like heart disease. So I’m probably a bit late in bringing
this to you as I think we’ve seen the last of the go!
od weather for a while. Did you see the forecast for the weekend? Well, I hope
you’ve got the board games ready for the kids as I think we’ll have some rainy
afternoons coming up.

Well, that’s nearly it from me. Just finally, I can’t believe I’m talking about
Christmas plans already, but I see that the lights are going up around the
region. The switch-on of Withernsea’s Lights takes place on Friday 30th
November. Organisers wanted me to put a call out, because if any charities or
fundraisers would like to have a stall set up, then they should get in touch
with the Town Clerk. And our very own BBC Radio Humberside’s Westenders,
Jonathan Parker and Marcus Heald, will be there to help with the switch-on. So
that’s Friday 30th November.

Wow I feel like I’ve done a service today with all those plugs. Always at this
time of year, there are lots of events going on and I think I should help by
promoting them in the Letter. So keep in touch with me and I’ll do my best to
highlight them in the Letter. And as always, if there’s anything you see or
read about that you think we should mention in the Letter, then let me know.
It’s the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Have a lovely day and make sure you keep your umbrella with you!

Take care,

Peter
