Hello and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope you’ve had a good start to
your day, it’s certainly not the warmest, driest, or sunniest day we’ve had
this year, so wrap up warm, perhaps in front of the television tonight to watch
Look North!

Coming up on the programme, this morning the A52 in Lincolnshire saw another
fatal crash involving minibuses taking migrant workers to their jobs. Tonight
we'll investigate what's being done to improve safety.

We'll have the latest of our special reports looking at how the money you gave
to Children in Need is being spent. We’ll hear from 12 year old Bethany as she
explains how she was helped and supported when her dad died.

It's caused tempers to flare around schools in North Lincolnshire and now
police are cracking down on the parents who illegally park outside schools.
We'll have a report from the school run in Scunthorpe.

Also tonight, it might feel like the rugby league season has just finished but
for the Hull FC squad training gets underway again today... They're being told
to get on their bikes to get fit!

And finally, it's Christmas Day in Skegness... Hundreds of holiday makers
travel to the East Coast every year for tinsel and turkey short breaks. We'll
be asking them why!

And of course we’ll have the latest weather forecast as always, that’s all
coming up on look North at half past six on BBC One.

Children In Need

Well it’s Children in Need night this Friday, and already people across our
region have been raising money, I’ve had a couple of emails reporting
successes. Thank you very much if you’ve been involved in fund raising, and if
you’ve got something planned for Friday or this week I hope the preparation’s
going well. Last year the appeal raised over £33 million pounds, which is
phenomenal. If you’re doing anything extra special, or if you want a little
plug in the letter, drop me a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I’ll see if I can
fit it in. You can also contact me if you’re got any stories for the programme
or any interesting pictures or comments, send an email to me and it’ll go
direct to my computer.

Curvy Women

Good news for all you curvaceous ladies out there, new research suggests that a
voluptuous figure could be a sign on superior intelligence! Researchers studies
16,000 women and found that not only did generously proportioned females do
better in cognitive tests, their children were more likely to do well too. The
all important measurement is in the hips. The bigger the difference between the
hips and the waist, the better to women did in the tests. It’s an incredible
piece of research.
The scientists speculate that it’s all to do with levels of fatty acids in the
body, including Omega-3, which you might have heard of. You can buy supplements
of Omega-3 of course, and it’s plentiful in oily fish. It’s supposed to
increase your brain power, and that of your child if you’re pregnant.
It all sounds very convincing, but then you think of all the thinner ladies in
the world who are also very intelligent, and you wonder how true it is. I think
it’s difficult to guess intelligence by waist measurements, I can’t see how
much use this research will actually be in the real world, but then we keep
reading it, don’t we? Some people actually have careers doing this kind of
research…

Gun Safety

I had a story in the letter a little while ago about dog owners being shot by
their own dogs after leaving their guns on the floor with the safety switch
off, well in the news today there’s an example of an even more blatant
disregard for gun safety. I don’t know if you’ll believe this, but I promise
it’s an absolutely genuine story.
A 66 year old man in the US has injured himself after trying to use a gun to
loosen a stiff wheel nut on his car. Now when I first read that I imagined that
he was trying to use the gun to lever or force the nut, but no, he actually
fired the gun at the wheel hoping somehow to undo it.
Before you say it, he wasn’t intoxicated, and he was alone at the time. After
he became frustrated with the nut, he discharged his weapon, with the resulting
ricochet spraying him in the abdomen up as far as his chin. He’s currently in
hospital with severe but not life threatening injuries. So if you’re reading
this and you own a firearm, I think it goes without saying that that’s not a
good idea, and a gun isn’t a mechanic’s tool. I don’t think anybody else is
stupid enough to try that, but then I wouldn’t have thought anyone would do it
in the first place, but there you are…

Well that’s it from me today, enjoy your afternoon and I hope you can join me
for the programme tonight at half past six as usual.

Take care, bye for now.

Peter
